I have a guy at work that needs some cash and wants to sell me his Ruger bisley 44 mag for $400. He claims that it is in like new condition. I don't really need another gun but wouldn't mind picking it up for a good deal. He is bringing it to work tomorrow and I will post pictures. What would be a good deal?

400 for a Bisley is a great deal. Around here, beat up blackhawks still bring 300 - 350, so if it is in good condition, buy it and run.

I'd roll out 4 bills right now, probably go 450 in new shape, just bought a brand new .357 Bisley Blue for 540 and not dissapointed. Have two 45's that shoot lights out.

Some folks dont like the Bisley model preferring the original plow handle grip design. I am not one of those people. I like the plow handle just fine as well but prefer the bisley for a couple reasons.
#1 is fit the Bisley is just more comfortable for me. Good fit = good shoot
#2 The Bisley grip frame is all steel where the Black Hawk frame is aluminum. I believe the Super BH frame is steel as well but not the BH.
#3 I much prefer the smooth rounded trigger set to the rear most part of the guard over any wide or serrated trigger as in the SBH
#4 The Bisley hammer, trigger, and grip are more pleasing to my eye than any other.
I too have a factory Bisley in 357 mag and I can honestly say that I believe it is the strongest 357 mag revolver ever made. It uses the same diameter cylinder as the 44 and 45 so has very heavy cylinder walls. It will easily handle loads that my mod 94 Marlin will exibit displeasure with.
I also have a 45 convertable Bisley 45 Colt 45 auto. This one was a butcher job on a standard BH I traded boolits for at a gun show many years ago. I sent it back to Ruger and for a pittance they made it as new again. Then years later someone traded in a Bisley Vaquero 44 mag. I siezed the opertunity to rob the Vaquero of its grip frame, trigger, and hammer so now my 45 is a full flegged Bisley and the 44 left our shop as a standard Vaquero.
My opinion is even in rough shape showing plenty of wear but in sound shooting condition it is worth the asking price.

$400 is a good price if you think you will like a Bisley grip. It works for some folks but everyones grips preference is different. Personally if it has a good bit of recoil I have to have a Bisley grip.
Good luck.

I am one that prefers the Bisley grip frame. I would buy that sucker in a heartbeat!

I love the bisley grip on my 44 mag hunter.

Not nearly in as good of shape as was first thought. The ejector tube has very deep scratches and the gun has some light surface rust. It looks like a gun kept under a truck seat. It does have scroll work engraving and engravings of a man shooting on the cylinder with the script Ruger Bisly surrounding the man.

With pictures now what would be a good deal?

Offer him $350, all he can say is no, then remind him he needs the money.

I'm not real demanding when it comes to cosmetics, but mechanics and bore/chamber condition I'm a total Fascist about. Given the abrasions to the ejector rod housing, make sure the ejector rod runs smoothly throughout its complete stroke. If so, $350 would be my offer.

Remind him that if he ends up taking it to the local pawn shop he will not get over $100.00 for it.
Also remind him that it is not quite what he had said it was and so you are not quite as interested. With that I would offer $250.00 cash on the spot with cash plainly visable.
Perhaps he will accept the offer or make his final adjustment to his asking price.
Never start the buying process with your best offer when he may take less. The condition of the gun, his poor decription, and his ergent need for $$$ is now working in your favor.
You can ride this horse just stay tight.

Sorry, but...

To me it is a SBH with the wrong grip frame, ugly 'engraving' that serves no purpose, and a beat up ejector rod housing...

It'd have to be less than $300 for me to even look twice...

But then, I'm old, cheap and cantankerous...

Ask my Wife...
