Question for ya.

I love to shoot the same powder in different calibers.

Example,

I shoot IMR 3031 in my 7x57, and my 30-30.

I would like to do the same with my new Ruger.

is there a powder that you like for both .45 LC, and the .454 Casull?

Also

Is there a problem with using the same boolit?

a 300 gr, cast?

Too big for the .45 LC?

Use 680 (or 1680) in both. AA5744 would work too.

AZ, My experiments with the 300 grainers were done waay back. I concluded that the weight was higher than the pressures allowed could accelerate fast enough. Nowadays they load .45 LC to .44Mag energies, and get 1300 fps with that boolit weight.

If you're talking about top end loads, you can't beat Lil Gun, It out velocities both 296, and H110 (these are all three supposed to be the same powder? - yeah, but not quite!), and I suspect it to be more forgiving to being loaded down somewhat. 1680 in AA manuals looks muy good, but tests, and word is it doesn't accomplish what is claimed. Plus it probably won't work very well in the .45 Colt. But 31 grains is very accurate in my Rampaging Bool.

If you want buttkicking, but not top end loads, try AA#9 or Blue dot. One reference I found for #9 puts it at 1300 fps with only about 20,000 psi (there's your 1300 fps in the LC) that was in the Casull, LC pressures would be higher. Blue Dot will get 1250 fps with 16.0 grs. in the LC with 250 grain boolits. That used to be my top end load. Should be able to go higher at the newer higher pressures being used nowadays.

It really depends on the types of gun your .45 Colt is. If it's a Ruger Redhawk, then I'd suggest W296, H110, or Lil Gun. On the other hand, if it's a peacemaker or clone, I'd suggest Trail Boss, with the caveat that Trail Boss loads in .454 Casull would be light plinkers.

ive had good luck with aa9 2400 lilgun 110/296 and H4227 in both. If i had to pick it woud be a toss up between aa9 and H4227

I use 2400 in both the 454 and 45 colt
But depending how hot you want to load each , Bluedot , HS6 also do well in both also

I use both a 300 gr plain base and 300 gr GC bullet in both the 45 colt and 454

Just IMO the extra wear and tear on the shooter isn't needed with the 45 colt cases , unless the 300 gr bullets shoot lots better

I tend to load mainly 250 ish gr bullets in the 45 colt
Mainly because I plink with it
A lot of ground hogs have died from high speed lead poisoning from a 250 gr 45 cal slug at about 800 fps out of the Ruger SRH 454
