View Full Version : My flintlock elk!

Flintlock Hokie

Last Monday in Wyoming! He came in to a cow elk call. I pulled the trigger at 40 yards. I was shooting a traditional flintlock pushing a round ball cast from wheel weight lead. He doesn't have a monster rack but I'm thrilled. :D

.50 caliber; 38 inch Getz barrel; .490 cast ball; 15 thousandths Ox-Yoke patch lubed with mink oil; 90 grains of Swiss 3F powder. This gives a muzzle velocity of 2000 fps and it's accurate! There are 10 shots in the 50 yard target below!

Bigger than any elk I have ever shot (none)! Nice job! Nice rifle too. I am going to try for whitetail this year with a caplock.

That's just dandy. If I was in the pic, I wouldn't be thrilled, I would be ECSTATIC.[smilie=w: I'd probably need an oxygen mask.:2_high5:

and then......the work started.
for those that don't know.
an elk that size is about 4 big white tail deer.
plus,, just the head and gear on top will be @ another 75 lbs.
an elk on public land with a flinchlock, muzzle loader or a bow is quite an achievement.

Very nice! If i happened to pull that off i would be floating! And as for horns, a trophy elk is the first legal bull you find, IMHO. Also some VERY good eating right there! Congrats on the bull, it is great to see somebody prove that the ol' rocklock and roundball kills stuff just as dead as it used to!

That leaves me out of course, I could'nt possibly handle such a chore, but thank goodness there are those who can. I've eaten elk a some game dinners in the area, delicious.

Damn, just started casting my own & now with photos like that, I'm thinking I will have step up to a Flintlockmuzzle loader myself.

Got to be a great feeling pulling of a shot like that. :D

AMEN BROTHER!
My bull last year was only a mile and a half from camp. It still about killed me and the wife, getting him out on our backs. In all fairness, he did die on top of a cliff...

Congrats on a great hunt. Enjoy those tenderloins!

Congrats any elk (not on a game farm) with any weapon is a trophy as far as I am concerned.
It sound like you have that flinter dialed in.
