I have a Savage 99 in .300 Savage, serial 560XXX, which I believe translates to manufacture date of 1950. It is not a takedown. I am trying to determine how original it is. Metal does not appear reblued. Stock looks original finish, no extra holes. Buttplate fits properly, so I think it is original but it does not have Savage logo. I am not clear if rifles of this vintage have logo on buttplate or not. The tang has 2 holes but maybe rifles were factory drilled for tang sights. Again, I do not know. I am taking this to a big gun show next weekend in Seattle area so am trying to determine value. Bore is bright. Everything functions fine. Rotary magazine is brass.
Any comments are welcome. Thank you for looking.

Or the Stith scope mount, if you can find one.

It looks to be fairly pristine - If it is, FWIW, I sold a like 1953 version this past Spring for $695, with 2 old boxes (full) of Remington 180gr Core-Lokt .300 Savage cartridges.

Thanks for the comments, Rimfire.
just asking because I do not know...What distinguishes the EG from the G?

G-model was a take down. 1920-1942. Pre WW II
Pre-EG-model was a soild frame. 1936-1941. Pre WW II
Post-EG-model was a solid frame 1946-1960. Post WW II

The tang has 2 holes.- Factory drilled for mounting a peep sight.
The only logo found on your rifle is engraved on the front of its receiver band: >Savage Model 99< and 1/2 way down its barrel.

If you know the year your rifle was made by its serial # Use the (above) dates.
Hope this info helps you determine which model you have. As nice as your rifle appears in your pictures posted on C/B >it should command a reasonably high resale value/price.

Thanks, Justin, for the information

I looked on this website and according to their database it was made in 1950. I am taking it to the Puyallup show next Saturday. If I can't get a decent price I wil keep it for now. From what I can determine it appears to be all original so it should get some attention.
Hope all is well with you. Good to hear from you.

Also, Savage 99's usually have their model letter(s) stamped into the front face of the action (remove the forend to view), on one (single letter model, like "F") or both sides ("E" "G") of the rotary mag's axle hub.

The LBC (Lever Boss Code) is a surefire dating method, but is sometime lightly stamped/illegible.

FWIW, in my neck of the woods that's a 700-750 dollar gun, maybe a bit more. It would be less back in Michigan.

Pietro, where on the lever is the letter code placed? I looked mine over pretty well but I do not see any markings.

thanks

The LBC should be on the side or front of the lever BOSS (where the lever pivots), and not the lever.

the plot thickens (maybe)
Attached are a couple of photos. One shows the inside of the forearm with what looks like an "E" and sideways "H". At the top there is a partial "8"?, hard to tell. I blotted out the last 2 digits of the serial number, which matches the frame.
The number/letter in front of the boss to which the lever is attached is "15B". I looked at it with a hand lens and good light. It is a "B" and not an "8".
excess650- no cracks behind the tang. The wood looks pretty sound.

Why would you want to sell such a beautiful old Mdl. 99? I have a Mdl 99, just like yours, onlly made in 1949. Mine is chambered for 250 Savage and is my primary deer rifle. It is a joy to carry and shoot. For 3-4 rounds at least and untill the barrel heats up, it will hold one and a quarter inches at 100 yards. I plan to keep mine for a good long while. They don't make rifles like that anymore.

Moondawg, I understand your sentiment. The lines of the 99 are what appealed to me in the first place. I do not hunt or "collect", am just a target shooter. Being on the wrong side of 60, it is very hard for me to get any kind of sight picture. Everything is just a blur. I will not drill it for a scope, that would be sacrilege. If I cannot get a decent price, I will keep it.
Thanks for your thoughts.

LBC codes: A=1949, B=1950, etc. on up the line. They skipped 'O' and 'Q' for obvious reasons.

I looked at a fairly nice one in 250 caliber, at the gun show yesterday.
It had been restocked at some point, and if the wood had fit just a hair better, I would have brought it home, it seems like my 300 wants a little brother. lol
