Griond Hogs and Cast boolits

I have an old barn about 70 yards from the back door of the house.Ground hogs think it is a great place to live.So when ever I go outside I always take a good look around before going out.
The one in the photo is number 5 for this year.

I have been using my 788 Rem. in a 222 with a 225415 boolit and it works very well.

On this one I had my new Encore with a 30-30 barrel.It was loaded with a 311359 H.P. over 27gr. of H4895.

I thought that the boolit would do more damage than it did.Exit hole was about 1 inch.Not that much bigger than what my 222 does with a 225415.

Anyway this is my first kill with the Encore. I think it will work OK to keep the ground hogs at bay.......Terry

There ya go! I like cast for groundhogs. I have a bunch of 30-40 Krag stuff loaded with the Lyman 311299 to use on the varmits. Last one I killed was with a 45-70, 530gr 457125 and BP. Way too much fun.

No GH's out this way, but we do have rockchucks a few hours north of me. I was planning a trip that way at the first of the month, but it may have to wait a bit.

Buckshot and I have raised h--l with ground squirrels using cast boolits, him largely with the Lee Soup Can 30 calibers--me with the 243 and the RCBS 95 spitzer. Velocities in my loads (12.0 grains of 2400) run about 1650-1700 FPS, and the hits don't spread the rats out like a 223 with j-words can do, but they keel right over with authority. Jackrabbits and crows do likewise.

Nice shooting TC. Be careful about handling the carcases though. The last one I shot behind the house was examined by rolling it onto its back and parting the belly hair. I found what I was looking for. Deer ticks. So tiny that if they weren't gorged with blood they would have been practically invisible. Lyme Disease isn't the Black Death, but it's bad enough.

my experience with .222 and 58 grain rcbs cast bullet is it is hard to find a powder it wont shoot--and they do a number on jackrabbits.

We call them woodchucks, and soupcans in the .30-30 do a great job on the suckers. When "The Enemy" moves into the neighborhood of someone's garden, it means WAR!

In the 222 I am using 21gr. WW748 with the Lyman 225415 cast out of type and hollow pointed with a forrester 1/8" drill bit.

Velocity is 2500 fps 10 feet from the muzzle.This out of my 788 Rem. These shoot around 1 1/2"to 2" at 100 yards. This is good enough to shoot ground hogs in the head sitting in the old barn door.

This boolit cast out of linotype and hollow pointed to a depth on .090 just comes apart in side of a ground hog.Instant kills and about half the time there is no exit hole.
I have found the 222 easier to work with than the 30-30 using cast boolits......................Hope this helps ..Terry

The only problem I see is using a scope for only 70 yds.
I see too many shooters with scopes on their rifles when not too many years ago we all used to shoot with open sights. I am talking out to 500 yds.
Now I see scopes on handguns shooting 50 yds. Am I in a time worp or something?

Clean, skin, quarter then boil until the meat comes off the bones. Cut into small pieces and mix with your favorite BBQ sauce while reheating in another pot on the stove. Serve on hamburger buns. Yummie!

I wish we had some around here. I miss the sport and the meat.

That's OK. I was just yankin' you chain.

I can't type well, either. Some people are dyslexic and confust the order of letters in what they read. I call myself "dystypsic", in that I often transpose characters when I type. My only defense is to carefully proof read before I post. Even that doesn't work all the time.
