End results of a 240 grn jacketed hollow point for the next 2x4 shoot I go to. These start off as an almost striaght walled hollow point. This is a .44 with 7 grns of Unique. It was shot into a box of packed dirt.

striaght walled hollow point. Ok, what's a striaght or straight walled hollow point? Do you mean a regular hollow point? It mushroomed nicely. Was it a 40s&w as a 1/2 or 3/4 jacket? How about a before picture?

I was wondering that as well, but thought I was coming off as a jack @$$ for all the other questions.

they set up a 2x4 a certain distance away, they start the timer and you try to shoot the too by for in half, fastest time wins.

Exactly, Sorry for the misspelling in the original post, Dislexic(sp) fingers.

The hollow point has just enough lead at the rim to keep it from deforming when shot and the outside of the sidewalls are almost straight.

The shoot is done mainly for fun at the club I belong to. Most shooters are using .45 cal autos. I got it in my head I could compete with my Ruger Super BLACKHAWK. Came in third in the last shoot while shooting with a guy using a .38 spl swing open cylinder. (A Rossi based on the S&W Mod 10) Now if we went by round count we would have probably won. We fired less then 48 rounds total while the guys with the autos were firing that many each.

This sounds like fun! Still like to see a photo of the bullet before being shot. Thanks

Big plus one on the pre-deformation photo. I have done something similar using .40 S&W brass and lee 180 grain TL SWC bullets

Ill have to do a little write up on my process. Its very archaic but it does yield brass walled bullets that can be fired out of a .44.

Pictures as requested. The two fired bullets on the left are bullets that actually went through the 2x4, the one on the right was shot through a box of moderately pact dirt and hit an old tree stump.

That looks like an excellent bullet.

Are you shooting into the 2x4's end-grain? Or are you shooting at the middle of the ~4" tall, 2-foot-or-so-long board?

Sorry, I'm just trying to visualize it--sounds fun!

We take the 2x4 and set it on end, with the wide side facing the shooter, in a holder then have to shoot until the top half is seperated from the bottom half. Kind of an expensive and inaccurate way of cutting your project lumber.

I watched the latest episode of Top Guns (the spin off of Top Shots) where they had the .22 rimfires. they did a similar thing but used a 1x2 and faced the narrow edge. Where as it only took them about 15 shots, it takes the one guy who uses a 22 at our match, around 100 to topple the 2x4 which is faced with the wide side.
