Used the Cabelas Hawken .50cal and shot the Custom Cast 343 grain conicals with 80gr Pyrodex P into Moist sand at 50 yards. Almost complete penetration of the 10 gallon sand bucket I use.

Who says you need a Hollow Point or Wide Metplate " Nose of bullet" to get amazing bullet expansion?!

335 grains Recovered Weight!

Nice mushroom! That's almost turned inside out.

Are you paper patching those or are they slip fit on the lands? Grease cookie under?

What is the alloy?

Very nice! I'm guessing pure lead or close to it? Inquiring minds want to know.

slip fit. No cookie but i am not finished experimenting. I got some Pyrodex RS to try out tomorrow so we will see how they react to the new powder.

Alloy is Pure Lead. Can't have any hard stuff or else they wouldnt load.

I kinda figured.

I got to ask though ~ why no lube grooves?

How many shots do you get before they won't load or do you wipe after every shot?

Just curious.

never wipe. I got 12 shots the other day without any trouble. I didnt want any kind of groves in it. Kind of like a powerbelt without the plastic skirt and hollow point. The Alox worked great today so I am happy with the results so far.

Interesting.

How does accuracy hold up as you shoot?

Don't think I have ever tried Alox with Pyrodex. In fact I haven't shot very much Pyrodex. BP was always available when I shot muzzleloaders a lot but not so much anymore at least where I live.

Pyrodex is the only BP substitute I have used though. Worked pretty well for me.

If I could keep the front sight clear on the hawken, i could have put 6 shots through a quarter size hole yesterday LOL.

Mr. Pyrodex RS shows its beauty today.

Cabelas hawken 50cal 1:48 twist
343gr CC
80gr Pyrodex RS

50 yards.

First shot on clean bore is the highest, next 3 down low are on a dirty bore. I will adjust the sights and then clean the gun and try 90gr RS and see how she works out. It doesnt have that nasty sharp crack Pyro P was creating so I think RS has finally given me a chance at accuracy.

Those sure are pretty! I too found alox to work just fine with pyrodex. When you say slip fit, what exactly are all the dimensions of the boolit and gun?

Is there a particular way you came up with the design of it?

Dam I love this stuff. My deal is making home made black powder as some know. But this
post intregreeds me.You must tell what gun & twist & that stuff.Don't come here and
tease us like that (WINK).

One other thing as I have always heard ALOX won't work with Black Powder.I don't
know for sure. But it sounds it works with pyrodex.I will never change from REAL but
would like to try this sale deal, same bullet,Alox & all just to see.

God I love this hobby.

Its been working excellent with pyrodex.

That was with a cabelas hawken .50cal 1:48 twist. I mainly want it for my 1:28 twist guns but it looks like its going to work with them all.

The only thing I see is that with the absence of lube grooves I would be afraid of leading the barrel up over time. Of course you will know if that happens because your accuracy will drop off. Time will tell.

Many speak of horrors using anything but animal and vegetable based lubes with BP but I have had very good results using Valvoline PB wheelbearing grease as patch lube in several muzzleloaders and also as lube for Lyman 457124's in my 1895 Marlin .45-70 ~ hand wiped into the grooves long before I had a sizer luber or knew about pan lubing.

Never had hard or tar like fouling at all using BP or Pyrodex. When I ran a patch through the barrel of the .45-70 I got wet black muck out. Not going to claim record setting accuracy as I never shot in competition and was more or less just a serious "plinker" but accuracy was good enough for me.

Not sure if Valvoline PB wheelbearing grease is still available or not but I have also used other wheelbearing greases with similar results.

I have not used Alox with BP or Pyrodex. I am assuming you mean Lee LLA tumble lube? If so I wouldn't figure there would be enough to keep fouling soft but not having tried it, I really have no idea. Pyrodex doesn't produce as much fouling as BP but not too far off but if Alox is working for you that's great.

Always interesting to read posts like this.

I have a Hodgden Reloading Manual, where L. Simpson has an article on Pyrodex

his recommendation is to not lube the first boolit, and I don't remember anything mentioned about leading

nanuk that is interesting, I will have to see how that affects the first shot impact vs the next 2 lubed shots.
