I have a question. I am trying to determine about what kind of velocity I am going to be getting in my muzzleloader using a lee 515-500-F boolit. I am trying to 'roughly' replicate the .50-70, maybe even the .50-90, but I am not trying to push it real hard. So I have settled on 70-80 grains. I am assuming that I could get a rough idea from normal .50-70 data, even though I know its not going to be the same.

From what I can tell, I should be getting around 1200 fps shouldn't I? I just wondered if Quickloads has any information on this. I am going to test it at different ranges, but I would like to get an estimate on where its going to hit at various ranges and all I lack is velocity.

Thanks

first you will need a .500 dia slug if you size down that .515 dia slug you won't have much lube capacity in the lube grooves.

second do you have a fast twist barrel 1/32 or faster to stabilize that long of a slug.

I use the lyman 395 gr great plains sized to .501 my mold throws them out at 405grs pure lead. Swiss 2f 90 grs 405 gr 1/32 twist out of Lyman great plains rifle
=1525 Fps. sight in at 100yards at 200 about 1ft low.

Already tried some swaged .510", 585 grain boolits that were only knurled. They shot in almost 1", but I only had a few to play with. My twist is 1:28. It will for sure stabalize the 500 grain boolits. My groove measurement is .510".

I have been wanting to do something like this but how do you start the bullet in the muzzle with out tipping it? A .510" diameter bullet will not go into a .500" bore-.510" groove barrel with out a hammer and something to keep it straight.

good ? Chill Wills I have 3- 50tys and all will only slip fit .501 on a clean bore on a .500 bore and can a 1-28 stabilize a 585 gr slug up to or past 200 yards I don't know?

Yea, I had my doubts too. I even had a guy send me some instructions on how to build a starter to get them in straight. But upon him sending me the plans, and the boolits to try, he also suggested I try withe the built in recessed crown that CVA put on some of their guns. I am guessing it's to ease loading of sabots and getting them straight.

So I tried, and I could get the boolit halfway in with thumb pressure. Then the rest of the way with a simple short starter. Lead is amazingly slick when pure. I also only lubed with alox. And with it being over an inch long, the boolit actually centers itself in the bore. If you think about it, being the complete full size of the grooves, there is no way for it to get off centered. It did put a lot of myths do death in my mind.

One of the guys down in the ML section, where my write up of this is, got some info from the Lyman BP manual. He says about 1200 fps with 80 grains pyro rs, ~500 grain boolit, 24" barrel. I'd still like to hear if someone has actually chronographed their .50-70 or .50-90.

Quickload says 1315 fps, with 80gr. Pyro RS. This is a weighed charge of 80gr, or the equivalent of 112gr. on a regular black powder measure.

If you set the black powder measure to 80gr, it is about 57gr. Pyro and good for just over 1100 fps.

Great. Thanks for the info
