Hi,

I am just starting to play with cast boolits in my Model 94 Winchester 30-30. I purchased some 150 LRNFP plain base sized to .309" and have been loading them up to pistol velocities and having fun at 50 yards. I am running around 1200 fps to 1300 fps using pistol powders.

I would like to move up a little in the velocity range (1600fps to 2000 fps) and would like to get a small sample 50 or 100 boolits that are LRNFP but sized to .309" of 150gr weight and have a gas check installed.

I am having difficulty finding anything commercial done out there that I can readily buy. I would like to see how something like this would shoot before I spend money on molds, sizer die, Gas checks, etc, etc. I have reloading equipment and have been buying commercial cast boolits for the time being. Before I get into casting my own, I would like to see what I can do with Gas Checked boolits.

Anyone know where I can get my little hands on something like this? 150gr LRNFP (for tubular magazines) with Gas Check and lubed too.

Thanks!

most guy's here use 180's and size to 310.
anyway
go to the swap and sellin section.
at the top of that there is a "want to buy" section, you can try there.

or talk to jerry at carolina cast bullets [p.m. him here under the carolina cast bullets handle]
or p.m. bullshop here, i'd bet dan for sure has a 150 mold.
both of them will most likely try to talk you into 310 diameter body and at least a 300 nose.

Ok,

I will put a wanted note in the classifieds.
No problem with .310" sizing, so long as I don't hurt my gun or myself. I am trying for a medium power "plinking" load that could be pressed into black tail deer duty.
That is why I like the 150gr, but beggers can't be choosers !

the extra .001 in size will increase pressure by about 300 psi.

And 170 to 180 gr cast boolits seem to work best for my in my 30 cal rifles at the velocities you mention.

answer to your question-

I am not sure who would pay their price though. You might as well shoot jacketed bullets.

I am getting in touch with Bullshop. Thanks.

Yeah, but they are cast by a laser.

Wow. Those are spendy!

Find someone who can cast you up some RCBS 30-150-FN
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/112800/rcbs-2-cavity-bullet-mold-30-150-fn-30-caliber-309-diameter-150-grain-flat-nose-gas-check
Use a gas check and you should be able to run them at jacketed velocities. Especially if you add a little linotype and solder to your silver stream.

i know for a fact you can shoot the rcbs 30-150-fngc past jaxketed velocity's, i've done it in several 94's and a savage bolt gun.

You can't do that! Its not safe, and it may pickle your barrel, and your bluing will flake off! :kidding:
You know, its not the misinformation that kills me as much as the fact that its over 50 year old misinformation that people still take to heart!
Its like talking to someone who still thinks that cell phones cause ear cancer!
I have personally shot strait cast WW lead boolits 2500 FPS with no leading. I intend to find an accurate 2600+ FPS load for my 358s.
BTW the reason that R5R can shoot "past jacketed velocities" is because cast lead boolits cannot produce as much chamber pressure as a jacketed bullet can and therefore can be pushed a smidgen faster with the same pressure. I suspect that paper patched boolits could be pushed even faster.

Well, of course cell phones don't cause ear cancer, that is silly.

Everybody knows they cause brain cancer! :kidding:

Of course, most of these "experts" on the dangers of cast boolits are
TOTALLY immune to this particular disease. ;-)

Carolina Cast Bullets here does a fine job, I have shot some of his 30 cal boolits and they work just fine!

I think that you guys are taking the effect of lasers on your cast bullets too lightly! It's like Sharks with fricken lasers on their heads.

wow sharks with lazers, i thought you couldn't get those anymore.

carolina cast bullets worked better in my marlin than the lasercast, plus they are sized (several sizes), GC'd and lubed.

Today i sent cpy911 a box o boolits. I remember when i first started reloading there were so many kinds of molds and so many kinds of cast boolits from so many different suppliers. I bought several boxes of them and later i ended up throwing them in the pot and making my own, I even put some up on the boolit exchange and pretty much could not give them away. when members send new casters samples it really helps and i am glad to pay it forward. some weeks ago i got packages from brass magnet and doug94 they sent me some samples and now i am a big fan of NOE molds.
This is a great place.
