It's not a bad powder. I found I had to treat 2f like I would goex 3f. As the kernel size of the Schuetzen 2 was much closer to goex 3. When I did that and dropped the powder charge from 70-65 grs, the accuracy came right around. It leaves a hard grey fouling here in our dry climate, but it's farily easy to deal with.

Ps I so have some Schuetzen 1f, I thought would be really great in the 44-77, my rifle hates the stuff, glad I only got one can of it.

tried it.ok but I'll stick w/ goex ... How about some load detail facts by the grade you use as to why it's better than the Schuetzen grade you tried?

I used 3FFF in my old .45-70, and had very good results.

I have used 2f in a 45-70 with 500gr boolit with good results. My 38-55 does not like it too well.

I've tried them all and have stayed with Schuetzen 2F @ 70gr and a 480 gr bullet for my 45-70's. I did a side by side comp with Swiss, Schuetzen, and Goex and did not see a huge difference in fouling or performance. Schuetzen seems to be a well made product as I have found little in the way of dust or fines and the kernel size is consistent. Swiss is still the gold standard of bp and does have a glittery unique look; however, I do not shoot competition so I'm happy with Schuetzen and it's cost/performance.

New here and to BPCR but here goes.

My brother gave me a C. Sharps .40-65 with accessories this past June, in order that he share his addiction and piss off my wife.

During the week before Quigley (he lives in Billings so we were out at the Lee ranch every day), we were working up what load/bullet combo this rifle likes best.

We tried Goex, Kik and Schuetzen, all in 2F and 3F, bullet weigths of 370, 380, 390, 400, 405, 410 and 420, all primed with WLRM.

What we finalized on is:

Schuetzen 2F, 52gr
.030 veggie wad
BACO JIM409420M2 moulded bullet, 20:1 give a 422-423gr bullet
WLRM

In my limited experience, the Schuetzen left the least residue behind and provided the best, most consistent accuracy.

But as I am learning, even if you have and exact copy of my rifle, YMMV.

If one likes Schuetzen, try Graf's BP from Graf and Sons. It is identical to Schuetzen in every respect, made in the same plant and is the only BP I use..

The Mad Monk (a chemist) of black powder did lab tests and conclusively proved they are one and the same.

And the best part is, the Graf BP is one heck a lot cheaper.

Ok, what is reenactor powder? I see it in both Goex and grafs brands, what makes it different from regular black powder? As for the difference between Grafs brand powder, and Schuetzen, at Grafs they were only a dollar a pound different! At that price, I would take one or the other, whichever was in stock.

I've used it as well as Goex, Swiss, Kik etc. The Schuetzen is close to Swiss. I load in 45 Colt, 45-70 and 12 ga shot gun. I use FFg in all at this time but have used FFFg in shotgun and rifle loads also.

Ok, what is reenactor powder?

It's not designed to launch boolits... I suppose the quality isn't there... probably more suitable for piccalo petes than 1000 yard Creedmoor events. :bigsmyl2:

MJ, thanks for the info. I ask that question because my sister-in-law who lives in MA is real big in the revolutionary war recreations, they (my brother & her) have repro muskets (69 cal smoothbores) that they carry in marches, etc. and she shoots hers with the reenactor powder (blanks), but she was thinking of trying it with a patched round ball at a shooting range, and I think she needs to use a different powder, and you confirmed my thoughts.
