The title says it all. Here's a link to the website: http://thegascheckstore.com/ Is this guy still in business (website hasn't been updated since March, 2012)? The reason I ask is the late Ken Mollohan had a favorable article about them in the current Fouling Shot.

The Home Page was updated March 8, 2012.

I like the site. I just ordered a large supply in a group buy or I would try him out right now.

Thanks for the correction, WW. I edited my post to reflect it.

All, If you've ordered from TGCS, how did you know which GC thickness you needed? E.g., the .30cal. Hornady GC's I use are .0185" thick (micrometer reading) and ~.278" diameter (caliper reading), but they fit all my .30cal. GC shanks perfectly. (Said shanks are .276" - .277" by caliper reading.) Am I correct in assuming the .014" thick GC's are the ones I want?

Steve Johnson is a cut above! Steve is retired like me trying to make a buck. We both use Charles Darnall's FCIII check dies. We are not in competion with each other but often trade ideas, material contacts and secrets. Steve will do without to help his fellow shooter. He makes his checks with an arbor press so give him plenty of time in advance for orders. He also makes custom cast bullets.

Thanks to this thread I ordered 3000 .014 gas checks for 44 caliber. Steve was very quick to reply to emails and friendly. He's probably going to get my business from now on.

yes the .014 are the ones that work best in aluminum to fit most shanks for me.

As I recollect, his web site has directions for figuring thickness. I bought some froom him that were promptly delivered and functioned perfectly. I would buy more but now have improved freechex III dies for the calibers I gas check.

I tried his method of determining thickness and couldn't get repeatable or accurate readings as the shanks are tapered. However, Hornady #7070 .30cal. GC's (.018" thick) and some Al GC's Ben sent me (.016" thick) fit the shanks of all my .30cal. molds, regardless of whether I size them to .310" - .314".

I have been testing 20 different caliber gas check molds to see what works the best. My conclusion and many others can confirm, soft aluminum gas check thickness needs to be two to five thousands thicker than the mathmatical equation to actually crimp on. That is using the Lee Push Thru Sizer. My Saeco sizer will crimp on the thinner materials nicely. Now you have something to chew on. Ben is shooting some nice groups with .0167 on his 30 cal bullets. Maybe he will post some of his new groups.

I shot this Friday with .0167 " aluminum g/c's with my Tikka 30-06 :

Ben's Al gs checks fit everything perfectly and are accurate to boot. The finished checks measure .016" via my micrometer, but I don't know the thickness of the material Ben used. Also, I'm still waiting for an e-mail reply from TGCS.

Dan Cash: Could you explain IMPROVED ie. a new model?
Maven: Really a notable insight on material thickness. Thank you.
Ben: Likely the shooter and the gun for your group. Outstanding.

Improved means the FCIII have been enlarged to except thicker materials without jambing. For example the 30/303 FCIII's can be used on bullets with smaller than standard shanks and can be sized from .308 to .318. With the new quick change mandrels you can make checks with the 30 to handle most 8mm bullets. Changing material thickness to get the best fit. The 44 FCIII 44/440 and .0167 material can be used on the smallest to largest shank sizes.

The GCS sells aluminum gas checks. I've always used copper GC's. Do they seat and stay put? The price is good. Are the gas checks good?

I make my own checks from aluminum, .014 for 30 cal, and soda can for plain based boolits in 35 and 45 cal. I have a .22 CheckMaker on order when PatMarlins starts producing that caliber. Aluminum has worked great for me! Frank

Until I started making my own, I used a lot of Gas Check Store checks. His service was first rate as was his product. Used his check with success in lever gun competitions. They fit and stayed put as well as copper from Lyman or hornady.
