Guys, I have a Hoch action a guy gave me, as some of you may remember. He also gave me a Douglas .338 barrel, 1-14 twist, full contour barrel. Is there any of the good old BP chamberings I can make this into, for a 200 yard shutzen cartridge? I would much prefer to get a new barrel, in .38-55 for the project, but thought someone may have the bee's knees for a chambering for this barrel.
On the other hand, if you have a Green Mountain, or Badger barrel for the .38-55 that is unthreaded, 24" minimum, contour open, I would maybe be interested in a trade, or the .338 barrel, can be had for $120, plus $10 shipping. It's a heavy ol' pig.

33 Winchester and it's a dandy. 45/70 case necked to 338 throwing a 200gn boolit to 2000 fps. Ye Ha what a boolit shooter, I love it! And the 200gn RCBS is perfect.

Neck up a .30-30.

Brass is plentiful and cheap and the case will give you all you need for punching paper.

Failing that and if you want something bigger blow out a .30-40 Krag or .303 British.

Either way you will end up with a sweet rifle.

For a "famous" old black powder cartridge for schuetzen the .30-30 necked up to .33 equates to the old .33-40. This chambering was used much by Harry Pope with great success. He of course, necked up the .32-40 case. The .30-30 case will serve well for this though it is a bit shorter than .32-40. It is , however readily available. Wouldn't hurt if the twist were a bit faster than 14" but I use a 14" twist barrel on my .32-40 with a 220 gr spitzer. I have to lean on the .32 a little to eliminate tipping with the lomg bullet. I think you would get along well with a bullet between 200 and 220 gr ( the oldtimers probably used lighter bullets).

I think I recall reading that Pope's .33-40 came from "cleaning up" and re-cutting .32-40 barrels to his own preferred rifling specifications.

Up here the .33 win. uses a bullet of .333" not .338" even with a custom expander, you would be working the brass alot.

The .33-40 is sounding like a good way to go. It meets one of my goals, of cheap, available brass. Loading dies may be a different story, but imagine they can be found. Thanks for the input!
