can a .458 cast lead bullet 1.6 long be successfully used in a 1-18 twist barrel, or is it too long. give me all the input you can from personal experience. 110 grains of 2f or cartridge black behind it. thanks

The best I can offer is a NEI at 1.5”
It worked. 349-J Very good bullet!

1.6” should be too long for the 18:1 but might be very accurate on calm days and at shorter ranges like 200yds.. Your bullet nose will be a factor also in how much length you can get away with.

Should you give it a try, I would predict you will find it on the long side and move on.
I am using lighter/shorter bullets at faster twists (16:1) for much better performance in windy conditions. All this assumes you are looking for a long range target bullet 800y-900y-1000yds.

If you have something else in mind for this setup I would say you are too late. The T-Rex are all gone.

Yeh it might work, but that thing is going to be over 600 grs and your shoulder is not to likely to be very impressed with your antics, unless your using a Tollifson gun.

I shoot a 470 gr govt rn that is 1.440 long from a 17.5 twist. With 90 grs 1.5 it bounces off the sticks pretty good.

well i did swage up 100 bullets 1.6 long, shot at 100 yards, they were paper patched with 2 wrapps of number 9 paper and lubed with rooser paper patch luble. ever with a 15 mile and hour side wind they were in a tight group of 1 and 1/12 inches. i used 110 grains of 2f black and a poly wad behind the bullet. probably but may be not the bullet may loose stability past 300 or so yards. going to hunt with it. johnson1942

A fellow once asked me to work up loads for the 458 Win Mag using 720 gr gas check bullets, 1.7” long. The best I was able to do for him was 1600 fps. At 1700 fps they were over pressure with any powder I tried. He never told me how they did in Africa. I still have a small supply of the bullets. They do penetrate well!
