Queation about old powder

My dad just gave me a box of old powder in metal cans. So my question is could it still be useable? They all have some rust but they are still sealed. I hope I can use it because there's eight pounds there and all for free.

Open the cans and inspect the powder. If it doesn't smell bad and give off brown smoke it may be OK to use. It may also be good fertilizer.

Ill open them up then ill have to go by look or try to get my wife to smell them since i dont have a sence of smell.
