I have about 100 pounds of lead stick on wheel weights, and also a hollow point mold for use in 9mm. My question is, are soww too soft for hollow point bullets? Will they expand at 9mm velocities? Or Should i try some other alloy? Has anybody used soww for casting hollow points?

Thanks
Jason

I've used wheelweights (clip on) and found they are too hard for expansion, even at 50 yards. Try it, it should work.

SOWW should be ok. I use dead-soft lead with just a touch of tin for my .38's with a drilled hollow point, and they seem to be working ok at speeds under 1000fps. Out of a 9mm I think you shouldn't have a problem!

I use 25 to 1 alloy for my hollow point bullets. It is about optimum at standard, non magnum, velocities. Excellent expansion and weight retension.

All you need is about 4 pounds of Tin or 8 pounds of 50/50 Solder and you'll be in business for a long time.

I don't know. You might want to add 50% clip on WW lead to that soft lead, at least for typical 9mm velocities. Can't promise you any expansion though. Try it both ways and see how it works. enjoy Mike

Pure lead will certainly expand, down to 750fps w/ the right HP design. At typ. 9mm vel though, 1000fps+, I like 25-1 or even 20-1 lead/tin. Seems to hold shallow rfiling a bit better than pure.

I use 50/50 lead/ww for hollow points and am quiet satisfied in 45ACP.
