Tuned a 10/22 for a friend

A friend of mine is a retired high school principal. He has a really nice 10/22 in SS with a laminated stock and scope. I was visiting him the other day and the conversation drifted to shooting. He told me he couldn't shoot himself in the foot with the rifle.

I took it home and checked it out. The stock screw was loose, the scope was loose, the lenses were dirty and the barrel was dirty. I got all that straightened out and she's back in the business. I love doin' stuff like that.

I think you better give the educator some education in gun care. No excuse for a weapon to get like that. Yea I know it is all minor stuff but still them things should be common sense stuff if you own a gun.

You'd be amazed at how many of these ol' boys up in these hills have guns and don't have a clue about maintainance, cleaning, adjustment, stuff like that. I can't count the fellas that I run into at the VFW card shoots that NEVER clean their guns.

Of all the 22 ammo I have tested, the Blazer shot the best by far. I don't have any target 22's but the difference is very noticeable.

Now I can't find any Blazer 22 ammo.:cry:

You said it.

Loose stock or trigger guard screws, mounts, or ring screws, are obvious problem areas, and the easiest fix. A bit of cleaning and lubing is next.
Like you said, minor stuff can cause big problems. Had the loose stock screw myself in a 10/22

My Springfield's accuracy went south. After about 10 rounds into the group with several flyers, I stopped. I gave it sone thought and started checking. The rear trigger guard scrw was loose allowing me to flex the action up and down. A turn of a screwdriver at the range
put things right immediately. At home, I cleaned the threads, coated with a bit of blue Loctite, and the problem hasn't manifested itself since.

i shot some Blazer 22 this last weekend in a stock 10-22 with 6X scope. Four 10 shot groups ranged from 7/8" to 1.25" The other cheap bulk ammo is 1.5" or a bit bigger.

I bought a 10-22 six years ago. Have shot thousands of rounds through it including the infamous Remington Thunderbolts. It shoots well and is quite accurate. The only maintenace I do is to oil the steel barrel, tighten the screws, and swab out the barrel after a shooting session. I have yet had to field strip it, as there is no need to do so...I leave well enough alone. Also have a Marlin 795--same deal. My 1972 Marlin 60 does require a field stripping after so many rounds as the gunk (wax & carbon) builds up to make the bolt sluggish. No big deal..can do the job in five minutes.

It is very easy with some YOU-Tube video to tune a Ruger 10/22. I have made several into tack drivers with minimum work and after market parts. Great rifle.

And there's no shortage of aftermarket parts for 10-22s! You can spend a lot of money on one of those little jewels but there is a lot that you can do on a tight budget.
