I'm curious to know if anyone makes a mold that is in .45 Cal and 300+ Grain that does NOT have lube bands or gas check. Has anyone ever modified a factory mold to be of this nature ?

they are called paper patch molds.

Yep, probably going to be a custom mold as Whiterabbit mentioned.

I've got a bunch of Lee molds and a few Lyman molds and they have plenty-o-bands. I'm not paying someone $100+ for a mold with less work involved.

I wouldn't use "Brooks or Hoch" in the same sentence as Lee.

The "work" is going to be the same wether the bullet has grease grooves or not.It is the setup that takes the most time and the machining ,either cherries or lathe bbars, are going to take the same cutting time.

DODGEM250,
You could do it yourself and save yourself a lot of money.
Indicate absolute dead center on a lathe or mill. Bore out the bands with a micro boring bar on a lathe or boring bar head in a mill and then finish ream with either a 29/64 or 11.5 mm reamer. Either of these cutters should get you right about .453". That should size down easily back to .452". Remeber to use lots of coolant while boring and lots of cutting oil while reaming to get a good finish.
Good luck, jmsj

Not quite sure why you would say "less work involved".

Most moulds are cherry cut so exactly the same amount of work involved whether one groove, many grooves or no grooves.

If CNC bored then it is a somewhat simpler program to bore a "grooveless" cavity but of course the nose profile still has to be shaped.

The only simpler mould I know of is the cylindrical push out mould.

If you have access to a lathe, they are pretty simple to make. I have several.

What is the reason you want a grooveless Boolit? Paper patching? Improved BC? or?

It has been done. In fact, I have had pretty good success using a lube cookie under the smooth boolit in both .30 cal. and .44.

It has also been tried for long range BP but with less than stellar results as far as I know.

Just curious.
