Hi

I am using Lee REAL 50 bullet in a Hawken black powder.

Do I need to lube the grooves ? is a wad needed ?

What is the best technic ?

Thank you for your attention.

Etienne Brule.

I haven't shot REAL's a lot, but I've been putting a lubed wad between the powder and bullet. Works OK, and a lot less messy tham lubing the REAL.

Tumble lube, dry and no wad or patch. Been doing it for years with no problem. No leading or cleaning problems.

What do you tumble lube with? I have read here that LLA will turn to tar(with BP). Is this not your experience? Dale

I shoot the REALs in .45 and .50, using LLA, LBT soft blue and Lar's high speed red in commercial lubes and a homemade mix of 50/50 bees wax and peanut oil.
I do not use BP, though, only 777.

I guess I'm the odd man out. I shoot the 50 cal Lee REAL bullet naked with real black. no worries and good accuracy for me.

I have shot the Lee .50 R.E.A.L 350 grain slug naked, tumbled with Lee Alox, and lubed with 50/50 bee's wax-lard, both with and without a felt wad. All shot accurately up to 75 yards from my TC New Englander. I have not encountered the "tar" supposedly forming with liquid alox when using real black powder. I will say that accuracy deteriates after a couple of shots when the slug is unlubed or lubed with Alox unless you wipe the bore after each shot with a damp patch.

I cast mine from nearly pure lead with about 1/2% tin added to get sharp fill-out. The most consistant way to shoot this slug using real black powder is to use a wonderwad or a lubed felt wad over the charge and lube the bullet with a proper black powder lube like SPG or one of the 50/50 bee's wax & grease lubes. The lube keeps the powder fouling soft so subsequent shots can be loaded without wiping the bore. I have fired 50 shots in an afternoon with this combination and never had to clean. Accuracy was very good right to the end.

The over-powder wad helps to keep the lube from melting into the powder charge and seems to assist in accuracy. Lacking felt wads, a filler such as cream of wheat or plastic shot buffer will do the same job and also help to keep the bore clean. Sam Fadala used rolled up hornet's nest material for the same purpose with similar results.

I don't always lube but when I do, I just rub a little Wonder lube 1000 on it! Crisco will work in a pinch.

TC Bore butter does it for me.

I hand lube generously with 50/50 beeswax and olive oil, and then use a rolled up playing card to cut the excess off. I shoot this with a lubed wad over 70grs of FFF in my Lyman 50cal. The only thing the wad did was make the gun shoot more accurate. Cleaning is a breeze with or without the wad.

Hope that helps.
