I have purchased a new Winchester 1886 45-70. Just shot it for the first time this weekend. The only problem I had was you had to really force the lever forward to get the carrier to bring up a round. Seemed to be a click which brought the round up to be chambered. Is this a common problem for these rifles? thanks

Mine does the same...needs to positively complete the lever stroke to feed the next round, it will get easier with use.

What Jon K said. My RiceChester 92 in 44 Magnum was the same way, and it got more tractable after ~100 rounds downrange.

Yep, I've had a couple of the modern '86 Winchesters and you just have to jack that lever down with authority. It will smooth out with time.

Thanks for your help. I will keep shooting the rifle. So far only 10 rounds down range.

Could be the ammo. Chamber fully and then extract and inspect boolit for 6 marks where
it is potentially hitting the rear edge of the rifling. These things have near zero throat
and work best with Rem 405 J-bllets which are two diam - small in front and full behinde.

Encountered the same problem with a 1886 Browning reproduction.:(
Mine is headed up to Clement's Custom for an action job and proper throating.
