View Full Version : Alloy Comparisons

My (very well used) 3rd edition Lyman Cast Bullet Manual has a table on pg 58, comparing the as cast diameters and weights of various alloys: Pb, WW, No 2, & Linotype.

Has anyone performed a more inclusive test using the “common” alloys we might use?
I’m talking about say; Pure Pb, 10:1, 16:1, 20, 30 & 40:1, WW, No 2, Linotype, & Monotype.
Using a mould that does drop “as-spec’d” dimensions & weights, using the ”as-designed” alloy. Then vary only the alloys (as listed above) and record the differences of the diameters & weights.

This could be some very useful information, but it may be a little too time consuming to accomplish.

If a more in-depth comparison somewhere already exists, could someone direct me to it?

(Posted from the "salt mine", so I haven't done a search here.)

Thanks guys

the way i guess at it:
tin and antimony both decrease weight bout the same and make boolits bigger bout the same.
a 5/5or 2/6 alloy and a 1-10 alloy both weigh and size bout the same.
much like a 20-1 and a 1/3 alloy do [these also have bout the same bhn]
it's more like a percentage of other than, rather than what the other than is.
that makes a difference.
