I've been looking at the taylor smokewagon or the 1873 cattleman revolver in 357mag with 4.75" bbl does any one have any experience with these revolvers? namely how durable are they? accuracy? are they just show pieces or are they serious firearms? how well would they stand up to mag loads, should they be shot with mostly 38spcl class loads? this will be a working revolver but pretty to.

I would buy a ruger but they dont offer color case hardened frames and i dont have one

I purchased a Taylor/Uberti 1873 Smoke Wagon in .45 Colt with the 4 3/4" barrel almost a year ago from Bud's online. It is an amazing piece. The finish is simply beautiful and the fit seems perfect. These guns come with a trigger job and wolf springs and are timed perfectly.

I have only shot about 300 rounds through it as I do not go out shooting between May and October. It's too dam hot! It handles beautifully and shoots to point of aim at 25'. I load my own and the normal loads I use are either an Oregon Trail Cast 250gn RNFP or SWC over 5.5gn of TB or 7.5gn of Unique. I don't have a chrony so I cannot state velocities but both loads are very accurate.

thats what I wanted to know. thanks.I have looked at them on taylors web site but not seen them in person. I am going to sell one gun to get another and wanted to make sure I wasn't down grading. It will be the 357 4.75" as I have molds dies and enough brass in 357 and 38 to last 2 lifetimes and nothing in 45 colt

Glad to help!

BTW, I did not mention it but at the same time, in fact, the same order as when I bought the Taylor Smoke Wagon, I ordered a Uberti El Patron in .357 with a 5" barrel and it is a nice as the Smoke Wagon although it cost about $100 less. The El Patron Model, like the Smoke Wagon Model, is properly timed and comes with a trigger job and Wolf Springs. The actions on both are very smooth with a crisp release. I shot about the same amount of rounds through it as well, but mostly .38spl. I only fired about a dozen of full load .357.

Like the Smoke Wagon, it shots to point of aim at 25' with 158gn cast RNFP .38spl loads but a tad high, of point of aim, with the same bullet with .357 loads.

Both guns are true works of art!
