I'm looking for a recommendation for a 44mag gas checked mold for hunting. I would want at least dbl cavity or more. Nothing with a crazy price tag.
I'll be shooting them through a Marlin 1894CB with 24" barrel.

Thanks for your input,
Lunar

edit: right now I'm looking for a mold that I can pan lube and casts at .432 or larger that I can size down to .432.

Ranch dogs 240 or 265 grain molds.

They are nice and plan on getting the TLC432-240-RF, but right now I'm looking for a mold that I can pan lube.
Sorry I should have stated that in the original post.

Ranch dogs 240 or 265 grain molds.
Excellent design bullets and I have both. But get 'em quick as I understand Ranch Dog is quitting business. A huge loss to the shooting/hunting community!:(

These can be pan lubed and I do it often. Also look at Ranch Dog's dip lube method. Works for me too.

I'll try to pan lube the other RD molds I have, to see how it goes.
Seems like pretty small/shallow grooves for pan lubing, but there are more than typical so the volume of lube should be similar.

I'm trying to get away from having to purchase the LLA, and go with some home brews with Bees Wax, Parifin, etc. The LLA is stanky and messy.

mdi, how's that 265gr work in a 44mag?

You might try looking at Lyman 429244. It is a Thompson SWC gas check design. I believe the nominal weight to be 255 gr using #2 alloy.

NOE has conventional lube copy of the ranch dog 265 and last I looked at his page he had a few in stock. Might look into the 300 grain lee as well. I don't have it but it lookes as if it would feed in a marlin.

Been shooting it in my .44 Mag Puma and my Ruger SBH. Still working on loads, but so far the 265 is working well. Only shooting at 25-30 yards and getting 2"-2 1/2" groupa outta my Puma and a little larger from my SBH. Having sight/eye problems (getting old I guess) so my groups aren't as good as they can be. Been using loads of Bluedot, 2400, and True Blue. BTW, I've used Ranch Dog's Dip Lube method with no problems...

I've put bear meat in the refer with the RCBS 44-250KT!

For large caliber hunting bullets, LBT kinda wrote the book on bullet design, also my favorite aluminum molds, I've got most of his and would recommend them for big game hunting. Folks like Garrett and Buffalo Bore use his bullets/designs.

I will second the LBT bullet molds. They are great to cast with and the wide meplat makes them hit like a hammer.

Look for a Keith SWC (RCBS 250-KT is closest to his original design), or if there's any chance of using it in a carbine, get one of the NOE/Mihec/Accurate copies of the Lyman 430640, in a "fat" size (.431" or bigger). These are my go-to boolits:

I've always felt that 300gr boolits are too heavy in the 44 Mag (take up too much room in the powder chamber of the case) and that 240s are a little on the light side for serious work (need more sectional density than that). So, just like in the story of the three bears, my "just-right" area for the 44 Mag is 250gr-290grs, with 270-280grs being about perfect.

Looks like a quite a few good molds available. Good to see what you all are actually using and not have to experiment on something I haven't heard results about.
I never really trust the 5 star reviews on dealer sites.

I don't mind the single cavity mould for casting HP's. In the .44 Magnum, handgun and rifle, I prefer the Lyman Devastator 429640HP. Cast of 16-1 alloy or OWWs + 2% tin + 50 - 70% mine drop at 270 +/- gr fully dressed. They perform extremely well in game.

The Lee 310 performs VERY well in my puma. My bore is tight at .427 but it does will with unsized boolits droping .430-.431. I sized them with a .431 that crimps the gas check. Seated to the top crimp grove over a near max load of H110 I see impressive accuracy and velocity.

As far as pan lubing the RD TL grooves. If you are punching them out with a lube cutter and your fit is right I've had good luck with White Label Lubes carnuba red, can't say how NRA or similar would do.
