View Full Version : Did I damage my mold?

Today while casting and water quenching with a lyman/ideal 452389, one of the wood handles slip off the frame and I dropped the mold and handles into a five gallon bucket of water, I immediately fished it out and put it on the hot plate to dry/re-heat. I cast about 20 more bullets with it and they seem fine. So the question is (and I realize I need to epoxy the handles before using them) what did I/could I have done to the mold and what should I look for? Thanks.

I doubt the mold temp was high enough for any cooling shock to damage it. How hard it hit would be. If it fell on some boolits, and the bucket is plastic probably nothing bad. Keep it dry, check your next casts for size.
Are you using Lyman handles or Lee six cavs?

Lee 6 cavity handles, and yes, it fell on over 200 boolits in a plastic bucket

You are probably ok, but for the future, here is a REAL fix:

Gorilla glue or JB Weld works great on Lee handles.

Did the very same thing the first time I was using my 6 bullet mold. I found that over time, with each time of heating, cooling and reheating, the aluminum blocks did warp some. Eventually, I had to buy another mold. I used a small drill and drilled a hole thru the handles. Using some small machine bolts and nuts, I secured the wooden handles to the mold. Don't trust the glue option. Just what works for me:)
