A first on several counts, first handgun kill, first wild pig and first cast bullet kill.

Thanks Swede for supplying the 160 grain SWC mold for my .357 mag. Thanks White Label for the Carnauba Red Lube. Thank the Lord for allowing me the opportunity.

Congrats! What time of day did you see that hog? Did you stalk it or still hunt? Were you in Blackwarrior management area?
Good shot!

If I'm not mistaken that's a bullet hole in the forehead. Correct?

Great work. Is the revolver a ported Taurus? Impressive fill.

Black warrior management area, stalk hunt about 7 a.m. Walk and listen. A really good hunting buddy and a lot of luck. Taurus tracker 6 1/2 inch ported. Yes that was a head shot but as insurance. Dead animals hurt people, I don't like to take chances.

My hunting parnter and I hunted them all winter last year and never saw the 1st hog. We always saw PLENTY of sign but never any hogs. He was out there all this weekend and still no success.
Good for you to be wearing gloves around hogs. Game offices have posted notices of hogs carrying some nasty blood borne stuff.

Great job!!!

Now then don't just stop with that one, get back out there and drop a few thousand more, trust me when I say, there are plenty more where that one came from.

a truly sportsman like way you took that hog. I too wish to hunt them one day. I was listening to the radio and they had on a Texas farmer that management hunts them at 2:00am with a night scope on his AR saying that he has taken up 26 of 30 shots with his rifle. Not that that it is totally relevant but could a 223 take down a hog as well as the 357 used here? I know shot placement etc. It just stands to reason something that is as vicious as a hog would require a larger lead pill. I know he is simply trying to manage them but it would be better to retrieve them to potentially donate? Especially if they were the good eating size like yours. I would so like to make some wild boar hams and salami.

Nice hog! I read on another forum of a guy getting hog blood in a cut and ending up with some horrible disease, brucelosis I think. it cost the guy most of his hand to amputation. I am not sure I would dress out any game animal without gloves these days.

I think the 223 is fine for TX. Hogs, I think they pretty much any one they see regardless of size. I think if I was going to shoot a large hog with the 223 I would use a Barnes X bullet or nosler partition.

AMPUTATION? Holy smokes! What a thing.

Nice work on the hog! Sure makes a lot more challenging and just plain FUN with a handgun. Especially .357 as opposed to .44 mag or one of the several other "supermags" out there.

The physics of kinetic energy ...F=1/2M V^2
Force = 1/2 Mass X Velocity X Velocity

Yes a big diameter hole cuts more blood vessels and imparts a whoopin on the tissue, but...
a very fast moving projectile =a lot of kinetic energy

If that projectile is tumbling, then it too cuts a lot of blood vessels and imparts a similar whoopin.

A 223 semi auto rifle (like a ranch rifle or AR15) has the same advantages for the hog hunter as the GI in the field: lots of ammo for little weight, mild recoil = quick follow on shot, lots of capacity in one mag, no time spent throwing a bolt/working a lever, etc etc.

Having said that, it's all BS until you actually hit the hog.
The proof is in the bacon, as it were.
