What is the best way to sling a Marlin 336 with a straight buttstock?

I'm using just simple Nylon two points on most of my hunting guns, only use them to have hands free for climbing. AR's and stuff have different set up's. What exactly do you want your sling to do for you?

How about Wind's novel way from Marlin Owners. All you need evidently is a strip of elkhide....

If you want one that does double duty make a paracord sling.

If you have a saddle ring carbine you can do a singlepoint

I am huge fan of the Claw slings. They are not the best looking, but the rubber material does not slip off the shoulder. Try one, I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

I have most of mine set up for quick detach. I like the 1 1/4" black nylon mil issue on QD's.
Open up original loops and remove 1" loops, run clearing drill through hole, Q-TIP cold blue, smack of grease and away I go. Gtek

I will use the sling when I need my hands free. Dragging deer, etc. I was wondering if barrel bands or mounting to the magazine tube.

I'd shop for the 2 pc tube mount. You won't need to dis-assemble anything, and they're just as reliable as any thing else.
Uncle Mike's carries them

You can also find them on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Outdoor-Products-Swivel-Single/dp/B004XGAN9A/ref=sr_1_152?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1347247775&sr=1-152&keywords=swivel+sling+mount

I've used them in the past, and I'd buy them again.
And of course the standard stud should NOT be in the bullseye in the butt stock.

I've seen more than one circular barrel/tube mount that didn't tighten up enough not to slide.

For carrying or shooting or both?

Funny, never thought about it before, but I have used slings on all my bolt rifles, but have never put one on a lever. Not a conscious decision to do it that way, just the way I have always done it.

Strange days (maybe should be ways) indeed!

Probably a little bit of both. I usually wear enough clothes that I am not concerned about a narrow sling.

I am concerned changing point of impact. Just don't know if the magazine tube mount would tend to move it if I did have the time to sling up.

pretty much any sling mounted to the barrel (and this would include the mag tube) can effect POI if you put enough pressure on the sling.

Down here in the east central Florida swamp, sling gets you from the boat to the tree and up in stand then back out when your done. You get a couple seconds most the time and slinging up is not practical in tight cover. My stand is just big enough for my old behind, prone and slung up not an option. Just past point shooting most times. Gtek

All of my Marlins have front sling swivels in the foreend cap. I drill a hole in the cap and cut off a stud and then align it and heliarc it so it won't come out. Some Marlin Foreend caps already have the stud in them like my 39AS

I have 1.25" military style slings on several guns (Marlins ) and tend to favor them on my bolt guns. A good quality Turner leather sling is a joy to use.

I have also designed a 1.5" wide nylon belt material sling that I have on my RGS77 and Mini 14. These slings work like a "Ching Sling" in that they are very quick to get into on the way into a sitting kneeling or prone position. That way as you are going down the sling goes over your left elbow and when you arrive at ground level you are in a braced position.

At Front Sights Practical Rifle Classes you can go prone or sitting or kneeling as you see fit and most guys do it at the 100 and 200 yard lines. at 200 yards you have about 6 seconds to go from the ready position standing to getting the shot off. And believe me that is not very much time to go from standing to sitting or prone. If you don't have the sling on in the sitting position or prone position it is not that much steadier than standing.

My design allows me to be in the sling by the time I have my knees on the ground as it is all one movement. A huge advantage.

Also good for standing around in a rifle class as the 1.5" width spreads the weight of the gun out over a larger surface area which in effect makes it seem lighter.

I personally think virtually all rifles should at least have some provision for attaching a sling at least for carrying the gun more comfortably.

In most of the country I prefer to hunt, you can tell the newbies by the fact that their rifle has a slingon it when they are in the bush. Total PITA and allows the rifleto get hung upon blackberries, etc.

However, once on the way tothe hunting area and on the walk back, I see a sling as essential, otherwise your arms feel like they are dragging on the ground.

In more open country, the sling is an invaluable aid to aiming. I have a few levers with sling swivel studs. I must see if using them as an aiming aid effects the poi to any great degree. I think over 75-80 yards hunting medium and big game, it ain't about to make much difference. It will be an interesting exercise anyway (project number 379!).

One of my fav carrying slings is a nylon sling, pretty narrow and has a bit of spring in it. It drove me mad initially as it slipped off my shoulder continually. I ended up noting where it rodeon my shoulder and had a strip of inner tube sewed to it. Ain't going nowhere now. It would be better wider, but as it is so narrow and soft, it rolls up pretty small and can be placed in a jacket pocket while hunting.

For shooting, I'd try to keep it close to the receiver - keeps the barrel bending load from the
sling to a minimum. I think putting it on the cap on the forend would be good.

i like slings on my bolt rifles, but don't really care for them on my levers, but if they come with a sling i'll use it. i too prefer the milsurp type leather slings, but here lately i've kinda grown fond of those cheap sks type slings. i think there made of canvas, but i'm not sure. for $8 you can't complain!
