just test fired my new muzzle loader. i put a .45 cal 1-18 twist douglas barrel 35 and 1/2 inches long on a renagade thompson stock. i swaged up some .440 500grain bullets and some 400 grain bullets. wrapped them with 2 wrapps of number nine all wood fiber paper. i dry wrapped them and did not lube them. the load was 110 2f black goex poly wad then bullet. the 500 grain were all touching at 50 yards and at 100 yards almost touching. the same for the 400 grain bullets only they were 2 and 1/2 inches higher. she is a no fuss shooter and i credit douglas rifle barrel co. for that. when i get the barrel blued i will put a picture on here. johnson1942.

What is the bore on that barrel and how were they to load. Seems like it the bore was .451 they might slip down a but on the lose side. Sounds like you got a winner. Ron

to idaho ron: ,450 top of lands and .458 bottom of grooves. months ago i saw a picture of yours and i had sold some guns so i turned the money around back into guns. thanks for the inspiration it is a real shooter. same power as a 45/110 sharps, same load same bullet. the bullet isnt loose at all i figured i may need a .442 bullet but in this douglas barrel the .440 is perfect. johnson1942

it very easy to hold to the shoulder as the barrel is only 1 inch in diam. the barrel is made by douglas and track of the wolf put the breech plug in and put the under rib on with pipe already attached. all the rest was me. the good fourtune i had with this gun is that i already had a swageing die in .440. i wasnt aware that .440 would work i thought i would need a .442 but the .440 is perfect. really glad i ran across idahorons picture of his some time back. i kept going back to that picture again and again and the end results i built one too. boy does it shoot, same as hunting with a sharps 45/110. johnson1942

A fellow i shot with in a Spokane match has a .32 caliber he shoots that has a 1-16 twist and shoots 210g bullets.A have had the hankering for a .35 cal muzzle loader and now i may go through with it.

This must be the one your talking about. This is my .458 Bennit Mountain mag. Ron

That rifle shoots very good but for a 45 hunting gun this .451 Hot Rod Hawken is hard to beat. Ron

to idahoron: i really agree with what you said awhile back. when every one else is fussing with theirs yours just keeps shooting. i know their are a lot of guys that shoot all kinds of bullets that shoot really good but the paper patched bullet just gets addictive because it is so easy.

Today my son shot his 50 on cross sticks. He rang the gong ( 8"x11") every time from 90 yards to 150. He shot the Hawken a little today.I wanted him to make it his back up rifle if anything goes wrong. He didn't shoot it as well as his but he did well with it. I shot a half of a cinder block off hand at 100 yards and followed that with a gallon jug at 100 yards. We never even cleaned the guns we just shot and they put them right there.

One of the things I honestly believe is a lot of guys make excuses. The gun doesn't shoot right and they blame them self's. They blame this or that.

Once you find a load like the paper patched bullets then you work on you shooting skills with that gun. It is hard to fight with loads and maintain good practice. Paper patching has completely changed my thinking what a ML is capable of. Ron

idaho ron: write a step by step detailed book. i will buy it and read it. i have a gong to but i love to blow up water filled milk jugs. im serious about the book, its a void that needs to be filled.
