Looking for a load for deer for a 375 H&H. Using the Lyman 265 GC bullet, looking for 1600 to 1900 fps.

I would really like to use 2400 as I have lots on hand. RE7 would be a close second and may actually be better for the velocity window I want, at least on the higher end.

Anyone have any loads they have used? I prefer first hand knowledge over stuff just listed in a book.

Me too, btroj, I have 300 gr. hard GC Montana bullets and a bunch of 5744, just can't find any load data.

I went back to my log and here is what I have for my 375 H&H. Lyman 375449, 270 gr (#2 alloy) over 33 gr. 5744, CCI #200 LR primer. My coal=3.40". This is from Lyman 49th addition, page 286. My later notes say I got some horizontal stringing and accuracy was just ok and not great. This load probably needs more development! I hesitated to give out this load since the accuracy wasn't great but it might be a good starting place.

I have found 27 gr of 2400 to be a very good load. I used a 270 gr GC Lyman bullet, not sure of the number. With acron it gives right at 1700 and shoots nicely at 50 yards. That's all the farther I will shoot where I hunt deer so it is all I tested.

Go down with the charge just a tiny bit, you're on the edge of good there.

In my 375 H&H I shoot the Lyman 264gr bullet over 4198. Lyman lists it as the "accurate" load in their book. It shoots a 5 shot group you can cover with a nickle at 100 yards. It might worth you money and time to pick a pound.

Just a thought...

I would consider 4198 if it wasn't so miserable to measure. I use RE7 as a fast burner rifle powder instead. RE7 meters so much better and is of a very similar burn rate.

I think the 375 H&H is capable of far better cast bullet shooting than most, including me, would ever imagine.

I understand BTROJ! Thanks for not getting upset that I didn't answer your question in the thread! LOL

Let us know if you have any luck!
