Been to busy for to long to visit you guys. Sorry bout that. I hate to lead off with a question however sometimes a fella just has to go where the best info's at. Like here. Here's the deal. the ruger in 458 lott is frikin nuts for the old ww fmj african cull type slugs I picked up. 500 grainers. I mean the thing shoots long side my 6ppc sako. I noticed, they are largely bore ride. I think only about have of the non ogive surface is actually cutting rifling. Can a fellow have success doing this with a cast, I mean realize the same accuracy when absolutely pushing them screaming hot. Anyone who remembers me from here remembers I love cast but hate slow

I put a fair amount of 462560's and 457125's (590gr & 519gr respectively ot of my molds) through my #1 Tropical in .458 with stellar accuracy. I couldn't push them fast enough to create any problems.

Thanks Much,I'll look @ the 462560. Gas checks equal speed[smilie=l:

The 462560 did really well for me in a Ruger #1 .458 Win Mag as did the 45-500-N RCBS. They both shoot well and I have shot the 560 at 2200 FPS but had rather not as it does produce a goodly amount of recoil even with a "sissy pad".

There are two things going against you with the Number 1. This is based on my experiences with the .458 Win Mag.

The first is that Ruger generously throats its barrels to eliminate some of the pressure. This does nothing for cast accuracy and is one reason that lighter bullets don't do well in it. You have to fill that throat for accuracy with cast.

The second problem is that most 462560s cast right at .458" and are too small. I beagled mine and that helped. Finally, I took that mould to my machinist buddy and he hollowpointed it and made me a plug for a .156" diamter HP pin. He also took a boring bar and opened the bands to .462"+. Then, it shot well for me.

Now, I love big bores but I also like to shoot a lot and if done at close to factory velocities, it's not pleasant.

I eventually got rid of that beast and went to a Springfield chambered in .458 X 2" with a throat made for the 462560 and it shoots well in it. I have never gotten the feeding from the magazine down on that and have gradually decided that I can get about everything I want from an 1895 Marlin .45/70 and that's where I am right now./beagle

The Lee C457-500-FN shoots extremely well in my 450-400-70 at 2050 fps.

OK, now that we got our heads around the win mag cartridge can we get on to the lott? It has a throat which actually be not bad for PP. If I had any faith in PP. That being said it has a .4585 lead about .180" long. So it is just about the perfect cast chamber other than the fact that it doesnt taper slow after the .180. It climbs right into the rifling. The win mag is useless for cast of any performance . Well actually just plain useless overall. I've never found the need to shove things up a barrel that are .004 too big. I've always done VERY WELL just letting the proper charge bump up a 458 dia to a 458 groove. The one thing I will not do is try for speed with any other method than GC's. Dacrons, felts, fillers. the he11 with em. A gator gas check trumps all from where I sit

Hey Larry, how long is the top band of that as cast?
