Completely off the wall question.

I met a gentleman the other day who has a large frame Colt lightning in 45-85-245. Curious, I got to looking for the shell in the literature I have but can't find it. Is this a regular 45-70 case with a smaller bullet that gives room for more powder or is it something completely different?

My copy of the Winchester Catalog #58 of December 1896 has a woodcut of a .45-85-295 Bullard cartridge "adapted to Bullard and Colt's repeating rifles." According to Jamieson's Bullard Arms, the cartridge used the same shell as the .45-70, with bullets of 285, 290, 295 and 300 gr. There was also a .45-85 Marlin that was essentially interchangeable with this cartridge.

There is no mention of a 245-gr bullet for these cartridges.

Shoot, I can read writin but I have trouble typing typing - I should have put 275 grains. Your information is what I was guessing, I thank you for your response.
