Wasn't quite sure where to post this, so I guessed. A friend sent me a link to an outfit that makes .308 X .223 plastic sabots. If you recall, Remington developed the 'Accelerator' round many years ago and then quit with it. Now you can buy the sabots and load your own.

I bought some that are loaded in 7.62x25 for my CZ-52 - zippy little things.

I'd watch their reloading info on that sight - seems to all be from computer guesstimation

Jim, I bought a large bag of those many years ago and did some fiddling with them. Well I did find out those little goobers can really move but I had something telling me something could have been better. After going thru the net and asking a lot of questions I started to see the 1 common flaw.

I'm fussy with stuff so bear with me, I measured the length of the projectile and got a bunch measured out to within .001 of each other. When they get put in the sabot air gets trapped in there, I made a special little do-dad at work to fit my single stage that basically was a real short die with a seater plug that matched the ogive of the projectile. I assembled them all and gave them enough force to squeeze the trapped air out.

Want to find out the hard way just assemble them in the sabot and after your done measure with the calipers and see how close they are to being the same size.

Amen to that! Check their data for 4198 in the 308, 46.6 gns at 49300 psi and 49.2 at 45900??

46.6 4300 49300*

49.2 4500 45900*

51.8 4800 60900*

Data? We don't need no steenking data! We're Cast Booliteers, we develop our own data. And we do it with powders they would never try and some they never heard of. I just want the sabots.

Thanks for the link, Skipper. Always good to have access to two or more sources.

These seem to be the same, right down to the plastic seating die. My "starter pack" from Eabco came in yesterday, with what I suspect is the same computer-generated loading sheet as from sabotreloadingpro.

Somehow, I don't think I'm going to see the kind of velocities they're claiming, but I'm looking forward to playing with the sabots. If they work out reasonably well for jacketed .223 bullets I might try some cast bullets in them.

I have been reading up on these lately and been very curious. What diameter are the sabots? I know that they are nominally for '.30 cal' rifles, but would the work in something in the .312-314 range maybe?

The ones I have measure .310

TRX; about 10 yrs ago I was playing with these sabots, I was using the one's from a place in Oreo, Utah in a 30-06 I was using a chronograph, and getting up to 4400fps, I can not remember what my load was or the powder, I gave it up the accuracy was not good. Sprink

Very interesting, thanks. I had thought about trying to make some from paper or paper mache. I wonder how the accuracy would be when not driven so fast. Sabots for inline mzldrs are very accurate, I think the potential is there.

I think that I have about 40 of the original ones, sabot and bullet, that I picked up in trade sometime ago. I have no interest in using them. If someone wants them I'll send them to you for the postage for a SFRB. PM me.

I tried them a long time ago, couldn't get much better than about 5"@ 100 yds. I used the load data that they supplied with the sabots, and had the primers back out a bit., guess the data was a little on the conservative side?

That was my experience a number of years ago. I could get them going fast, but not accurate at any speed.

Same story for me. I'd also mention I reached a full case of powder before I got their max load. Didn't go as fast as I'd heard.

Yall sayin they have a significantly higher max charge? I wonder if accuracy could be improved by a different sabot design or using a larger boolit. Like a 270 lead boolit in a sabot launched fast from a 308. I think the sabot breakaway has a lot to do with accuracy, I've noticed that playing with inlines. Reading the paper patching adventures, it seems the breakaway there has a significant affect on accuracy also.
