I am not sure if I am allowed to post a link to a business.
I have seen many references to gas checks on this site. I know the material is expensive and this site seems to specialize in sheet copper including remnants and blemished material. I am posting it here since they do post prices.
Those of you using copper sheet can check the price vs brass or gilding metal

For those of you using aluminum for gas checks there is a process that will get rid of the aluminum oxide on the skin.
It is called chem film or chemical conversion. It is a process using chromic acid. The military spec number is Mil-C-5541 or MIL-DTL-5541. You want the class used for corrosion prevention and paint adhesion. It is Class 1A.
You may have never heard of it but aluminum military hardware uses this finish for corrosion protection and paint base.
