I'm trying to talk my brother, the General who knows everything, into buying a Lyman Deerstalker in 50 caliber percussion for deer hunting in the thickets next season. What say ye? I love my Lyman GPH, but a woods rifle it ain't.

Good rifle. My son has one. It's not too heavy and shoots well. The 1/48 twist is OK for the shorter distances for rb or slugs. Do a search on Lyman's home page for "reconditioned" they have decent prices on new stuff.

I had a GPR shot excellent but will agree a with you on a deer hunting rifle in the woods it is not,I have 3 flinters made bu t/c the longest barrel in 28" in 50 and 45 cal. and the renegade flinter in 54 cal 26" barrel are excellent stalkers when deer hunting
The one rifle I like is the lyman trade in 54 cal. had a chance a few years back on a 54 cal. flinter on sale closeout at walmart think it went for $175.00 after the PA deer season was over.I kick myself for not buying it seem you don.t ever see a used trade m/l for sale that offen must be a good gun,I here a lot of problems on wood to metal fit on lyman GPR seem there oversea quality is going down hill.

Lyman has some reconditioned Deerstalker's in .50 and .54 cal, less than $200.

Thanks Trooper. I sent the Lyman recondition link to the General. Maybe he'll get one. Inlines aren't allowed on hunts with me. . . .

I don't know about the faster twist Lymans but I have made and shot a bunch of the round ball twists, flint and percussion. Accuracy is outstanding and one ragged hole at 50 yd's is common. I don't think there is a finer factory rifle made.
Good recommendation, Junior.
