I thought most of Nevada was a range of one sort or another

49 acres is just slightly over 1/4 mile square. That's barely enough room to shoot BB guns.

160 acres is one quarter square mile.

160 acres is one quarter square mile.

A square 1/2 mile on each side is 160 acres, 1/4 square mile.
A square 1/4 mile on each side is 40 acres, 1/16 square mile.
You are both correct.

It says 49+ acres, with 870 feet of road frontage

49 ac. x 43,560 sq ft/ac. = 2,134,440 sq. ft
2,134,440 ÷ 870 = 2,453.37, (approximately) ft of depth, if it were a regularly shaped rectangle.

The ad says zoned for housing and agriculture. Those 2 don't mix real well to begin with because of the noise, dust and exhaust fumes from farm machinery.
Then if you raise some livestock you really offend the neighbor's sensitive noises.
Don't even think about firing a gun unless you are looking for a visit from the sheriff.

How much agriculture do you think there is going to be witn less than 8" of rain? We get 20" a year and without irrigation it is a crap shoot.

I see that first auction closed for $6,650.. not bad for 49 acres in my opinion.. wait a minute, the winner was "Lawmeg".. Is that an alter-ego of anyone here? :)

We get about 6 or 7 inches here but there is quite a bit of agriculture because we have underground water. There are beautiful yards where the people want them. I prefer dirt because you don't have to mow it. Also several commercial hay fields and some vegetable growers. A lot more growing in Virgin Valley, near Mesquite, and they don't get anymore rain than we do.

Agriculture: Oh yeah, it will support 99 gophers, and 6 jackrabbits in a good year ...Onceabull

Why would the sheriff give you any problem if you are legal and safe (and reasonable- not shooting at 4am). THey'll show up once to see what the deal is. If nothing wrong, as in unsafe, they probably won't even bother to come out a second time. Unless there is a law or ordinance against it.

A friend was out test firing his latest machine gun purchase (this was in MN). THe neighbors complained. The sheriff came out. He said there was a complaint. Dad said Jeff was shooting. Jeff was standing there with his machine gun sitting on the table a couple feet from the deputy's door. Then Dad pointed at the gravel pit saying that's the target area. The deputy looked at Dad, at Jeff, at the machine gun and the gravel pit. Then said "have fun" and left. This is super duper liberal MN.

I would love to have that 633 acre lot. Cooler than it is here and no neighbors. Completely surrounded by BLM land, putting in a range would be no sweat.

I have an idea: Let's all kick in $50 and buy it, set it up as the official Cast Boolit Shooting Range. Any member can use it and the club can hold shoots on it. We have what, 3000 members? If even one third of us kick in $50, we got $50,000 to buy it.

Being raised in Oklahoma in the Cherokee strip the last land rush in Oklahoma, all of northwest Oklahoma is laid out in quarter sections.
160acres to a quarter
320 to half a section
640 to a square mile
Waksupi was correct.

Perhaps some of you can recall several of us referring to LASC in posts here. LASC is Los Angeles Silhouette Club; it is a private club/range located on the property of Angeles Shooting Range (Legal name may be incorrect), a range totally owned by its stockholder members. It is surrounded by BLM land. Twenty or thirty years ago, a number of shooters worried about all the ranges in the area being shut down, got together and formed a corporation with shares issued to all the contributing members, and bought property from BLM to construct a range. They are protected from encroaching society for a long time. Their property is big enough to have safe shooting out to 800 yards I have been told; They have a public range that is open and well used 7 days a week; they have also sub-letted parts of their land to other interests to generate more income. One of those leasors is a Sporting Clays Range, another is LASC which is often mentioned here. As expected, the original stock issued to the founding members has appreciated in value quite a bit. So getting together to buy land for a range can well be more than a dream, it can work and be a good investment. If CBRick is who I think he is, he can tell you a lot more about this. There's even more we could do with it. We could set aside a portion of the land to sell to members in 1 acre lots where they could have retirement homes and summer cabins. When South Coast was shut down about 12 years ago, we were making plans to move to another plot of land and selling private plots of land in it to build houses on was part of that plan. We ran out of money and air, strangled by all that red tape. What money we had went into some silly EPA mandated lead clean-up that bankrupted the club and was eventually paid by the tax payers. Sic Semper Tyrannis...

I''ll go with Scrounger's figures. Junior, and I, are both right. I just misunderstood Jr.'s application.
