Im not one that usually will ask for loading suggestions as i like to do it on my own but with this bad back i just dont have the time. I picked up a 4570 contenor carbine barrel and was wondering if anyone had some favorite loads for one using 400 and 500 grain cast? thanks.

Lloyd just about any "trap door " load will work. With your back problem you MIGHT consider a 300/330 grain bullet. Recoil is less with the lighter bullets. Big ,heavy slugs are fine for buffalo at 500 yards, but YOU COULD NOT DRAG ONE BACK ANY WAY! I couldn't either!

Lloyd I would like to follow your progress on this, what kind of stocks on the carbine? I have a walnut thumbhole with fiddleback maple end caps, the weight helped with some of my hard recoil loads that and a limbsaver grind to fit pad. I have never fired a T/C carbine in this caliber but have a Marlin in it and I only shoot 300's in it, Good Luck.

ryanite stock 16 inch barrel. The recoil doesnt consern me. Beating the gun up does. Id like to find a load that will push the 540 to about 1200 fps if safe in a contender. Ive shot that bullet at 1600 out of a marlin and it hits like a hammer.

thanks scronger. I wonder why its so hard to find 500 grain data with pistol powders. 405 data is everywhere. but to find a 1200 fps load using something like 2400 4227 or aa9 is about non existant.

Friend of mine shoots 10 grains of Unique in the .45-70. He says you can go up to 15 but it just kicks more and he's happy with 10. Velocity is sub-sonic, less than 1000 FPS.

is that with 500 grain bullets?

I haven't had much luck with 500s in my contenter, but then again I havn't spent enough time experimenting. Seems like by the time I shove it far enough in the case pressures start climbing quick.

As far as 405 pb I've had pretty good luck using 2400, javelena lube, with a half inch square of dracon fiber. I don't have the load in front of me but if I remember right I start around 22 gr and the hot ones end up around 26.?. The high end ones have more than enough recoil for my threshold of pain in my nonported contender.

My next experiments, the 420 Ranchdog GB, and the Lee 405 HB. Any input anyone?

Lloyd... I shoot a 500 gr. 1881 cast out of my Buffalo Classic with 23 1/2 gr. of AA5744. With my 32 in. bbl. it only gets 1180 FPS. That's about as low as one can go with that powder and even then it's not position sensitive. It's very accurate, too. Just ignore the dirty burn and it won't bother you.
