Is there a way to tell cold bluing from not blueing?

What's the best way to remove cold blueing?

Inhibited hydrochloric acid will remove any bluing. Add 1g of urotropine (Hexamethylenetetramine) per quart of HCl. You can apply it by dipping or with a sponge (use latex or silicone gloves).

Nickel plating can be removed with ammonium or potassium persulphate solution.
It has to be heated near boiling point to work faster. The solution will turn blue and it will be very toxic nickel sulphate - a carcinogen.

But I don't understand this part:

without damaging the finish??

Nickel is the finish, what are you considering a finish that you don't want to remove?

Just plain toilet bowl cleaner works like a champ, BUT the gun will be bare metal and will start rusting right away so clean rinse and either oil or start you new finish process right away.

a baking soda/water solution will help neutralize the ph when finished as a pre final rinse solution..

If by bowl cleaner you mean one that contains orthophosphoric acid, then it will strip rust only.

Naval Jelly takes bluing RIGHT off, no harm to the steel.

Some cold blues have a metallic smell to them, you can smell it even years later. Others
do not smell.
