I ordered a great plains 54 caliber with the 1-32 twist. Should be a good gun for paper patching later but until then what would you guys recommend for a conical?

I have shot the Lyman 54 plains bullet in my 54 TC.it kicks like a mule but did well.
I actually sold the mold because it was so brutal.

I shoot the original TC Maxi Ball in my .54 Hawken with the 1:48 twist with 80-85 grains of Pyrodex RS. I have the TC peep sight on it (old eyes) and it will shoot clover leaves at 50 yards. That load should kill about anything you want to point it at out to 125 yards or so. I just got 10# of KIK fffg and I'm ging to see what 70 grains of it does. GF

I didnt know that when I ordered from track of the wolf that it would ship from the factory. I wish I would have went to grafs instead. Hopefully I have enough time to get it shooting for our season here. I think until I get the mould I am going to shoot the great plains bullet from hornaday. Hopefully I can get it in time.

I shot the Hornady Great Plains bullets, along with the T/C Maxi and Maxi Hunter bullets. They all shot very well in my rifle - I was routinely shooting 4" groups at 100 yards, resting my bony elbows on the bench. I bought a 1-66" twist barrel and switched to patched round balls, and never looked back - just for the purpose of being more traditional.

the Hornady GP shot exactly the same as the Lyman bullet for me.

I have the Lyman conical converted to hollow point and it does kick like a mule (agreeing with HarryMPope) in my T/C Hawken . and the Horndy will come close to fitting in the Lyman mold. 80 grains and a 54 conical makes a great brushgun here in KY
