Forgive me brothers for I was weak. For the Dall sheep opener I had a choice to make on rifles. I dearly wanted to use my 35 Whelen with cast, but I knew I had the likelihood of having to make a really long range shot. Ultimately I chose to carry my Ruger M77 .300 Win mag loaded with…gasp…j-bullets. Didn’t get up on a legal ram, but I did get to make a successful stalk on a grizzly bear. The shot was a whopping 86 yards. Yup, right in the 35 Whelen’s wheel house. Ack! I hope to get up north and try for caribou with the Whelen yet.

...As kids my age like to say, "Cool story bro!".
No need to be snobby to you about using jacketed bullets, they still kill stuff in my rifles too! A fine trophy and a beautiful place to hunt by all impressions!

I was more disturbed with the Ruger rifle. :kidding: Nice bear.

Quick, get that hide off him. Don't let the meat overheat. Congratulations on a successful hunt and on the next one.

Well Ya got to use what ya think you need. Don't beat yourself up, ya done good. How much did the bear weigh? I worked in Anchorage for 9 months in 2011-2012. I have got to get back. Beautiful area, and I love the culture of subsistence hunting/fishing etc.

You made the right choice...everybody that knows anything about shooting knows that a cast boolit will not penetrate a squirrel, let alone a Griz. Unless you can push it to 8000 FPS it just doesn't stand a chance. :kidding:

Nicely done, beautiful country. Congrats on your bear.

Ha, too funny! You may be happy to know that my 35 Whelen is in a T/C Encore.

I didn't get the chance to weight it or even measure the hide. I took the hide and skull straight to the taxidermist the next day. We had rode ATVs into the Talkeetna mountains for the hunt. I headed out the same day, so the meat and hide wouldn't spoil as the temp was around 70 degrees.

Nice bear congrats, that one has real nice colors, it will make a beautiful mount. I'm here in Alaska and would like to take one with cast. Are you going to rug it? I have seen some real nice shoulder mounts and they don't take up so much room on the wall that leaves you more room for your next trophy.

No rug or mount. The fur on the sides and chest was a little thin. Hide was still in summer-mode. I'm having the hide tanned and skull cleaned up.

That's cool. The late fall and early spring bears are in better condition. You still got you a nice bear. I love bear hunting. It's a different kind of excitement than deer hunting.

Very nice. Everytime I saw a bear, no matter the caliber, I always thought my rifle was small.

Here in Tn the black bears are the size of a large Rotweiler.

Ya know, technically it wasn’t even a jacketed bullet. I used a 200 gn Barnes LRX. 100% copper. No lead was involved whatsoever. I’m going to hell aren’t I?

If its any consolation it was monolithic, maybe not cast but they share that trait anyway.

IMHO: No, being that the bear would just as well eat you, as you it!

Good hunting!
