View Full Version : Picked up a modified Lyman 452389 today

I went to check out a Craigslist add today for lead ingots. I talked to the guy on the phone and he said his Father died and he had a lot of his stuff to sell as he didn't have the time to cast and reload.

I picked up the ingots, a couple of bags of .45acp 200 grain and 230 grain bullets. He also had a number of molds that I picked through and decided on a couple of odd balls. One was a Lee 90316 2 cavity 105 grain SWC .358 mold. Not sure why someone might want something like that, but I figure it might make a nice 9mm bullet if sized down.

The one I am wondering what it might be worth is a Lyman 452389 4 cavity that must have been drilled a little deeper and weighs out around 255 grains instead of 185 like it was designed for. The guy was a gunsmith so it actually looks like it was done fairly accurately. Not too sure how the slightly pointed bullets will feed, but interesting none the less. Looks fairly unused and comes with handles. I had no idea exactly what I had until I got home and weighed a bullet that was stored in it.

Any thoughts? Too bad it wasn't a 452 200 grain SWC as I shoot a lot of those.

Anyone care to trade a Lyman 4 cavity 452460? or perhaps a 158 grain SWC .358?

I will cast a few out of the mold tomorrow and post the bullets.

Show us a pic please. I have a 452389 that drops a 255 grain boolit and it looks original to me.

Welcome to the forum too.

I cast a few this afternoon and just weighed them up. Weighed in between 228 and 230 grains. Took a picture and it came up"Uploaded file is not an image". I will keep trying to upload. Might be too large of a file.

The first bullets cast with this mold turn out perfectly. Not sure how I came up with 255 grain in my original posting. There was some sprue on it, but hardly enough to make a difference. :killingpc

Here is a nice picture of the bullet produced by this mould.

The 105 SWC is one of the most accurate darn boolits in a few of my 9's. It won't feed in some guns but is scary accurate in others. I also love it in 38's. I load some to moderate velocities for fun revolver practice. For bullseye shooting I seat these all the way into the case and use them in my S&W 52-2's. They give up nothing to typical 148 wadcutters and they save a lot of lead.

I will have to work up a .38 special load. I will do a 4 or 6 cavity 9mm load.

So when you going to load some up to see how they shoot?

I may throw together a couple and see if they work in my 1911's.
