hada m44 carbine in 7.62x54R in the closet since 06,the other day i decided to get it out and take a look at it,bought some brass from plmitch(thanks again)off swapn and selln.got some lee dies, and suplies and loaded some ammo for it.took it to the range and it turns out to be a blast to shoot and turns out to be a pretty hard hitn round.I would have to say this is one of my favorite guns to tinker with.

They're fun guns because they're powerful, inexpensive, and so is ammo (relatively speaking). I couldn't tolerate the recoil of an M44 personally, and I'm not particularly recoil sensitive. It was like being body slammed every time I jerked the trigger, so I finally sold mine and bought an M1891/30 rifle. It's a bit more comfortable to shoot, and works very well with cast loads.

Heck, load it down a little and reduce the recoil. In mine I shoot the 220 gr Hornady .308" @ 2,000 fps. The .308" bullet shoots just fine. So does the Hornady 174 gr .312" bullet.

Muzzle blast and fireball with milsurp ammo are impressive to say the least! I agree though, fun to shoot & tinker with.

If you think the M44 puts out a fireball you should shoot a M95 Steyr at sunset someday.
I thought I had lit up the sky catching the ozone layer on fire.
Milsurp ammo for them is hard to find and kicks like Hades.
I often wonder how the WWII soldier kept from breaking his shoulder sometimes.

I arrived at the range a while back and guy I knew had his M44 there ready to shoot. He lines up on the target and I'm thinking "please be shooting heavy ball, please be shooting heavy ball" :-P

Turns out they were reloaded cast loads. :groner:

Mine slugged .3135. I haven't tried cast yet but when I do it's going to be at least .315.

I have a sporter model of the M44 that I made.
Long story as to why it is a sporter!
I use the 316299 NOE boolit with 31 grains of 3031 and a tuft of dacron.
It is very accurate out to 200 yards

Not to hijack the thread, but the Russian/Soviet DShK (pronounced dish-ka) 12.7X107mm heavy machine gun has the most impressive muzzle blast/fireball that I've yet encountered in small arms weapons! You get a blue-green fireball about 5-6 FEET in diameter with a blue-green jet of fire in front about another 5-6 FEET long! Most impressive, I must say. :hijack:

I have not fired my m44 at night yet,is it the surplus ammo that belches fire or will reloads also fireball?

Rumor has it that it becomes a little more accurate with the bayonet extended.
Haven't tried that as I gave five of them away, well almost:-? and only recently found a couple Polish copies this summer.
If you try this, please report results.
Thanks.

4895 or slower makes for a good fireball out of my Madsen, with it's machined in muzzle break. If you subtract for the cartridge and muzzle break, there's only about 19.6" of barrel. It's definitely not a flash suppressor.
