View Full Version : How would you clean this mold?

It came to me this way, covered in a layer of LBT wondersticky mold lube.
It casts fine although a bit sticky on the alignment pins.
I no longer have use for it, and would like to sell, but I feel the "ugly" condition is rendering it the "fat girl at the dance"

Would boiling it soften the gunk enough to to toothbrush it off, or is there a trick I don't know?

Soak it in Evaporust. You can get it at Tractor Supply. Let it soak over night, brush with stiff toothbrush, repeat as needed.

It will amaze you how it works.

I jumped the gun on this one. I thought I was looking at rust and this is an aluminum mold. However it woks great on steel molds and rust.

I'd 1st try soaking in brake cleaner. Then wet your toothbrush with the B'cleaner and give it a go with that also.

Try a toothbrush, and some denatured alcohol, or mineral spirits. One of them will probably cut it.

I would even try an initial soak with a good bore solvent. That stuff tends to dissolve about any organic goo I have found. It will also easily clean off with brake cleaner or something like that.

First try denatured alcohol. Let the mold soak for a day or more. Make a trip to Home Depot or Lowes. The 91% Isopropyl from the drug store probably won't cut it. Using a bore solvent on an aluminum mold may harm the finish. Good thing the cavities seem to be clean.

Carburetor/choke cleaner. It won't harm the aluminum and contains xylene and MEK which cut varnish and burnt stuff better than just about anything you can get.

OK then, I have carb & brake cleaner, mineral spirits, alcohol all on hand.
I'll give it ago.

Yes, the cavities are pristine and it cast wonderfully. It just that brown crayon **** LBT sends with the molds.
Thanks for the info!

Yes, but it's burnt on; i.e., you may need to soak the mold blocks for a few days to loosen it.

Be aware:
If you boil the mold, the Aluminum will discolor (maybe oxidation?)
anyway, it'll look even more awful, but will not effect casting.

What mold is it? If it's a 45 about 300gns, I would be interested in buying it from you, complete with brown gunk!

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser extra powder cleaning pad, hot water, and a bit of dish soap. You can go the carb/choke cleaner route and get alot of it and then come back with the Mr. Clean Eraser. Truely amazing how well they work on just about anything.

Try selling it as-is first. You might be surprised. Some people are happy to dance with the fat girl, to use your terminology.

What caliber & brand is that thing anyway?

I had it for sale a while back, no bites at all.

I had a can of wax and grease remover for prepping car bodies for paint

LBT is usually out of my price range. It looks like a real nice mold though. I'm a big fan of having all those extra vent lines & the big meplat is a plus in my opinion too.

I wish more mold makers would vent the top of the mold the way Veral does. Mike
