I was thinking about hunting and what you guys use. I have some cast boolits in20:1 alloy . do you think it should be softer say 30 are 40:1 ?

Are they paper patch bullets ... ?

it does make the difference as charlie asks. the paper patch isolates the projectile from the barrel steel. hence the boolit substance can be very much softer then a greeser as the paper isolates the lead from the barrel so the leading is cut almost non-existant and if your paper is thick enough then the leading from pure lead will be non-existant.

the soft pure lead or maybe just a bit harder is spose to be the very best in action when it hits flesh n bone. it gives great penetration and opens in a mushroom efect to cause the best of wound channels....PLUS it holds together and sheds almost none of the weight while doing this.

Pure soft lead works well up to around 2200/2250 fps. After that you need a bit harder lead to shoot well and preform well on game. ACWW works great to around 2600 fps.

 Since this is the black powder room, I guess hitting more than 2200 fps is not going to be a problem.

But yeah, 20:1 or softer will work great.

I'm running pure lead/PP in my Sharps Express rifle.
In fact that's what it likes more than anything else.

WGR,

For BP velocities I agree with the other posters that pure lead or soft alloy is totally adequate. For shooting high velocity smokeless PP at 2600+ fps in my experience you will need a boolit about as hard as you can get it. I shot a mule deer with a 7.5 Swiss PP at around 50 yards with such a boolit and it expanded to over twice its diameter and it retainded 80% of its weight.
