cast boolits that have been lubed with gas checks installed. My question is can the gc's be re-used after I fish them out or should I just toss them? These were installed on some of my "Earlier" casting work and I've since realized the following:

A) Poor quality as in rounded bases and driving bands.
B) Too small of a diameter for intended use.

Any thoughts?

Well, some people anneal their GCs so i don't think that part will hurt anything. If they aren't folded in too much you might be able to use a big ball bearing or something to flare them open again.

I think you just ought to try it and be prepared to not be successful. You will still get the lead back.

I'd put it under the not worth the effort catagory. You could turn down a punch that will bell out the gas check, but when you factor in the time to make the punch, time to open up all the gas checks, suddenly the $3-4 worth of gas checks don't really seem like the effort.

They may not come out clean enough to use. I annealed a batch in a fairly clean smelting pot but a few ended up with a little bit lead soldered to them so tight I couldn't easily remove it without reheating them, which wasn't worth the hassle. But by all means, try it and let us know how it turns out. If they come out clean, they may have enough spring in them that you can get them on a new boolit with a properly applied (plastic?) hammer wack.

TEN THOUSAND BOOLITS TO MELT???

Just kidding! Throw the GCs into your copper scrap and forget about them. If they were gold that would be a different story, but then again you probably wouldn't throw them away at over 1000 fps...:guntootsmiley:

i wouldn't even bother fishing them out of the pot for a session or two.

"never know if you don't try"

It seems nothing to lose and 100+- gas checks to gain.

I would try Theprofessors flaring technique or something similar.

Or, purchase a new firearm to fit the boolits.

Skim em off and use em for the top wad over a charge of some #9 shot. It's a great snake and small pest load. Here's a 44 mag that I did. http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af210/Wlew/63C8B02E-7879-4C01-89F1-2DB9F25C5CBC-1187-000001FDD5D6B45D.jpg

I sharpen a case with a deburring tool and use it to cut an over-powder wad from a cardboard primer box. Shove that down on top of 5-7 grains of Unique or Red Dot then dip the case level full of #9 (or better yet #12) shot and tap the GC in place with a small hammer then just run it up into the seating die to crimp in place. Once in a while a GC will kinda cock a little off square but it don't hurt nothin since you ain't shootin groups with em. They'll kill a snake graveyard dead at 15-20 feet and don't take much aimin to do it! Oh and they're pretty rough on field rats runnin from the tractor when you're bushhoggin or cuttin hay!
