There is a gentleman over on Rugerforum asking about reloading one and I figure someone here has played with one and can share some loads.

Good question. I don't have one but am interested in how they shoot.

I am curious as well. I suspect that the 30/30 has just enough neck to make it a major pain in the butt to load for.

Have fun with this stuff.

Saw a BFR in .375 JDJ. Sounds like a fun toy!!!

A BFR in 30-30 would probably be a good candidate for reaming to AI. That way you wouldn't have to worry about setback and case head separation if you wanted to stand on it.

I always thought it would be cool to have one, it just has never been high enough on the list. I am too busy buying full size Rugers up.

I figure MRI wouldn't still be making them if there was a big problem with setback. There is only 1 on GB, though. It is NIB.

I always figured MR made them mainly for the auzzi market. Magnum revolver in less than .38 caliber. Makes alot of sense to me if you're limited to that.

According to a friend who did some government work in South America, many ranchers down there had stretch frame revolvers made by gunsmiths to chamber their favorite hunting rifle cartridge, due to difficulty in obtaining cartridges in common handgun calibers. These were mostly in the .22 centerfire chamberings, but some used cartridges like the .30-30.
I'd not heard of anything like this being manufactured in the USA till years later, so this might be where the idea got started.

There are precedents though. The Herter .401 revolver, and a 19th century stretch frame SAA in .45-70 made for a Calvary test. The .45-70 revolver was intended for use with a special buck and ball load, one stubby .45 slug and three buck shot.

I am the gentleman who owns the 30-30 BFR...and I was wondering if there were any others on this forum shooting this SA revolver?.

No Sir, it doesn't look like it so far. But we are all jealous, and welcome to the forum!

Well, it looks like you will be our source for info. 8-)
I await all you find because it sure sounds like it would be fun. Wish I could buy one just for fun.
I still like big fat boolits for hunting.

Fired my 30-30 today at a sand-bagged 80 yards. Within minutes after bore sighting I was busting clay pigeons with factory 150 and 170 grain loads. Tried many rounds of 130 grain reloads I use in my Contender. Bottom line the 30-30 with its 10 inch barrel and 2 x 6 power scope is an accurate ***** cat. MY BFR came with 30-30 inserts that would accept 32 ACP rounds. Unbelievably, I need to do more testing they impacted in the same area as the 30-30 but the groups were about 3 inches.
You need to know I am a regular shooter of short barreled Encores under 16 inches in fairly heavy calibers...416 Rigby, 405 Winchester, 45-70, 458 Winchester and a 460 Weatherby. The latter will not handle factory loads but does a fantastic job with cast bullets and lots of 5744.

It sounds like the 30-30 BFR is up to the standards of accuracy they are known for.

Any issues with the cases lengthening and binding up the cylinder?

One might try web groups that feature TC Contender/Encore shooters.
.30-30 has been available for quite some time in this firearm.

No issues with case lengthening and or difficult extraction... cases fell out when the muzzle was elevated....next I will be trying cast bullets and experimenting with different powders.

I wonder if the slope shoulders of the hornet and the .30-30 make them more revolver friendly. I would think a K-Hornet or .30-30 AI might have issues.

I was planning on buying one myself, but noone had them when I was ready. So, I ended up with the 45 70 instead. DAMN, I love that gun. I reload for the 30 30 in the contender and you can make up some real smooth loads with unique and 170g cast. Cheap ammo, easy to load and fun to shoot.

This is my second BFR the other is a 45-70 that came with the 450 Marlin cylinder...you can make that one reach for the sky when recoiling and tears come to your eyes with some heavy and stupid loads.

Thought I would bring this thread back to life.

I have had my BFR 30-30 for just over a year. I have shot hundreds of reloads through it everything from cast RCBS 190 grain boolits to 125 grain jacketed. I even ran some Jwords super heavies from Hawk. I have an Accurate Mould it drops a nice 170 grain FP. But I am here to tell you they all shoot great from 1900 FPS down to reduced 1400 FPS loads. not one issue with case setback and cylinder binding at all. The gun really loves the Leverrevolution powder and the 170 grain cast bullets running around 1800 FPS.

Magnum Research BFR with 10" barrel. I shoot Hornady 30cal .308 165 gr. BTSP Interlock #3045 loaded with 31.5 grains of H-Varget, and avg. 1 1/4" 5 shot grouping at 50 yds. I do shoot a 170 gr. cast, but haven't taken enough time yet, to get the perfect load. So far, I am using H4895 with the cast, and getting good results, but summer is coming, so will get back out there, with other powders and find what works. This revolver has hardly any recoil with this Varget load, but quite a fireball out the end.
