This rifle came in today, bought off Gunbroker on monday $379.00, not sure of year of manufacture (ser # 648XXX lever is stamped 260 inside the oval) any ideas?? I have been looking off and on for over 4 years for one I could afford. I'm not even sure of the model number, it has the rotary mag and is in very good condition. I am going to try and post pics (this is the first time to post pics from photobucket and not sure if it will work). Cat not for sale either.

You can have the cat. You got a pretty nice looking rifle. Good on you!

At a glance it appears to be a 99EG model in very nice condition. The cartridge is a sweetheart and doesn't give up much to a 308 or 30-06 for practical purposes. Enjoy.

Thanks for the info. It appears the stamp in the lever oval is 26D, so look like it is a model 99EG made in 1952

With the M99s 12" twist it should be excellent with cast bullets:lovebooli

I'd say you made out just fine, considering I sold my 1953 99-EG .300 by walking it around a funshow, for $650, a few months ago.

I've got a 99EG in 300 Savage also. Lever boss code indicates a 1952 year of mfg, but a letter to John Calahan states, 1956 mfg but did not ship from the factory until 1962. Not so unusual as the .308 Win was already introduced and kinda of took the thunder out of the 300 Savage. Killed deer with my 300 Savage, .308 Win, and 30-06. Can't tell a wit of difference between any of them. Deer just go about 3ft, straight down. I load my 99 with 150 Win PP
at 2700fps. Got three other 300 Savages, a Rem 722, a Rem 700 classic, and a 7600 Rem pump limited run. My 99EG is as accurate as any bolt gun I own. Love it!

My "G" has worked fine for years shooting 311466 and 31141. Killed my first deer using cast boolits with this combo.

130 gr barnes triple shocks are a good performer with the 1 in 12" twist. Quick, flat and still packs a punch.

Got a couple here. I like mine. Maybe its because of their fit. They just seem to come up to the shoulder and point so nice. Yours looks like a Take Down model kind of. Curious. Does it have a brass boolit carrier in its magazine?
If indeed it is a 99G.(1920-1942) You sir have good taste in weapons. Congrads in purchasing your 300-Savage. I'm quite sure you will enjoy it.

Definitely not a takedown. It's an EG, as determined above.

By the early 50's, one could expect to find an occasional aluminum or even a color case hardened steel rotor, though brass ones are the most common.

A very, very, very nice find. At that price you should have gotten two.

My first exposure to the 99 was courtesy of my Uncle Paul. His only rifle was a .25-3000 with which he slew countless deer and a few bears in the Adirondack mtns. I lucked into an essentially new 99F from a guy at work. First season I owned it I lent it to a young kid in our hunting party. He proceeded to trash can a 6 pointer with a 180 grain round nosed core lokt on the season opener. A good sized doe followed the next day. Both were DRT. He was sold.

His father promptly engaged in a search for a 99 in good shape, enlisting the aid of a very good friend "in the business." What they came up with was a 99EG that's a dead ringer for yours. He got a pretty good deal because the original owner had mounted a marbles compass in the buttstock, a seemingly common practice of the previous generations. It came equiped with a tang mounted peep and chambered the good old .300 sav.

I bought some brass and dies from members here and taught him how to handload. He's set with a couple hundred rounds of 150 nosler partition loads and a 3lb coffee can full of 311291s for practice loads. When all is said and done he's in possesion of one of the finest deer rifles I've had the pleasure to handle.

Over the last two seasons I have used my 99 extensively.
I don't believe the praised heaped on the 99 do the design justice.

Thanks for all the input. I am waiting for some brass and cast bullets that I am getting from
some of the forum members and a set of dies I got off flea-bay.

I`ve got a 99 take down, not tapped for scope, .300 Sav. The rifle was the deer rifle for the original radio Lone Ranger, Brace Breemer, that lived near Oxford, Michigan. It has an early Williams peep sight and is in very good shape. It was given to a neighbor of theirs that enjoyed hunting. The neighbor later passed it on to me.Robert
