Say I have a .44 sp load which runs in the 800fps range out of a 4 5/8" Blackhawk. What can I expect the same load to do out of a 20" LA rifle? Does the powder make a difference? Typically I use 231, Unique and Universal.

An answer with as broad a spectrum as the question, around 1200fps would be a good guess..........

Shooting a 250 Lyman Kieth in teh .44 Spl--7.0 of Red Dot...

6.5" Model 24---940 FPS

USRA94---------1,110 FPS

170 FPS faster---18% more velocity

Fast powders like Bullseye,Red Dot, 231,and Unique the rifle will add 150-200 fps. Slow powders like 2400,296,H110, 4227 will add 350-400 fps over a pistol.

Years ago, like 35 years ago I loaded and shot a lot of 44 mag with 231 and the RCBS 250 SWC. I owned a 7-1/2" Ruger Super Black Hawk, a Marlin 20" carbine and a Ohler 33 Chronograph.

With is load, the revolver came in very close to 1200 fps and the rifle close to 1500fps. That is but one example for what it is worth. Others may get something else.

I hope this helps.

Hornady 265gr FP with 22gr of H110 clocks 1325 out of my 7-1/2" SBH and 1650fps out of my 20" Marlin 1894S...

Or did back in the late 90's when my chrono still worked...

I've considered developing different loads for a similar combo in 45 Colt for a 4 5/8 RBH and a 94 Trapper. If the LA is your primary and the RBH is backup I'd develop an optimum load for the LA and check to ensure acceptable performance in the revolver. I'm thinking a bit slower powder will give a bit more flash in your revolver but a bit more velocity and consistency in your LA.
I'm thinking 296 and 2400 are worthy of consideration for this combo.

Pretty much what I have found in my 45 Colt Marlin and Ruger. Itis all load dependannt.

Thanks TxGunNut and btroj.

I was thinking the same thing; slower powder. Since I don't have any 2400 or 296 and my SA is a .44 sp, I think I'll play around with 231 a bit and see if I can come up with a happy compromise.
