So I want to cast for my mosin nagant. I slugger the bore and groove dia. is. 313 lands are .301

Now per Lyman manual it says. 001 over groove is a good starting point. Which brings me to. 314
I was planning on resizeing with lee resizers
so do I find a mold that cast. 315 and resize to 314 and gas check or do I cast a Lyman 314xxx forget the numbed right now. Then use a 314 resizer to seat gas check.

Or do I resize to 313? I know I need throat size for best accuracy but this is a plinking gun. So for now enough accuracy to keep me interested is good.

I'm spending more time on my 03A3 for more accurate shooting. My testing so far with that has
.3085/.309 slugged measurement and 309 cast boolits did best so far....

My plan is useing the 2400 16 gn 200 yard target load per Harris article.

So what would be a good starting mold and sizer to get rolling for the mosin nagant

Finally found some 2400
I would like to try some varget with cast but not finding much data.

mac,

Generally, bigger (as long as it'll chamber) is better. But you never know until you try it.

I have a 94 Winchester in 38-55 with a .3795 bore. My 375449 mould drops at .3795, almost, just barely and I mean just.

Didn't figure she'd shoot, at least not without leading, but what the hell, I tried it. Worked a treat with zero leading. So you never know until you try.

Good luck.

................mac1911, first thing to do is to get the mould, which I assume from your comments will be the Lyman 314299? It's about the only common one out there that is supposed to cast that large. I'd then get a Lee .314" push through die. Even if your boolits drop at .314" from the mould, the die will still seat the GC's.

My NOE copy of 314299 has been super in every one of my Mosin's that I've tried it in.
I've used Unique and SR4756 with great results.

I use an NOE 316299 mold and cast straight wheel weight lead. I water drop just because its easier for me. I size them to 313 with a lyman 450 and use aluminum gas checks . I had the 316299 from a prior rifle that had a bore of .315. The load is 13 grains of Red Dot and with that combination the rifle will hold under 2 mimutes at 100 yards all day long. I do have a 4x long eye relief scope mounted to the machined dovetail that is exposed when you remove the rear sight of a 91-30.
Good luck with your load.

.314299 works best for me in my MN too. I would like to find a .313 sizer for my Lyman, but meanwhile the .311 I use does good.

+ another for the 314299 for the MN. You may find you have to size to .312 so that the loaded rounds wll chamber regardless of the bore/groove size. Has to do with the chamber neck/throat design of many combloc MNs and the cases used. For example in my M91/30 sniper with Norma cases I can use the 314299s sized at .314. With PVU or converted milsurp cases I must size to .312 as the case necks are thicker. I could turn the necks but have found that to be practical yet for the MN.

Got to the range......results where enough for me to keep at it.....rifle shoots more to the right than the fmj
I managed to keep ten shots with the score rings of a sr1 target....I did notice some verticle stringing as gun got warm
