View Full Version : T/C Impact - Good Cast Boolit?

Ok, so last year I bought the T/C Impact. It is my first muzzleloader and I must say, I am hooked.... And very confused. The Impact is ridiculously accurate (3 touching holes at 100 yards) with the 250 gr. T/C Shockwaves. Can't remember what color sabots they were. I used 2 pellets of Pyrodex.

Now to my confusion: I'd like to use cast bullets in this gun as the Shock Waves are too expensive. Now, I realize that the Shock Wave bullets are Hornady SST's (at least that's what I've been told). So what cast bullets can I use?

1. Can you shoot "bare" cast bullets like you do in any other rifle? I.e. do you have to use a patch of some sort with a cast bullet?

2. What size bullets? What is the standard .50 cal bullet size?

3. What kind of lube is necessary?

4. Are round balls better?

Any recommendations are welcome.

Lyman Plains bullet 50 caliber.Lube with about anything. It should be about .508-.510
My 1-32 Lyman shoots RB great.Just use a tight ball patch combo. My rifling is fairly deep and i am not sure how yours is but its worth a try.

i use this for lube http://www.bandgeekwarehouse.com/Items/019954949693?&caSKU=019954949693&caTitle=Planet%20Waves%20Step%202%20Protect%2C%20L iquid%20Carnauba%20Guitar%20Wax%20%28PW-PL-02%29

the "Lyman 50 Plains" is a bullet mold.

Take everything following with a shaker full of salt.
If your twist rate is 1 in 66, you will be better off using a round ball

If your twist rate is 1 in 32, a short, stubby bullet is probably better. Think the 250grain Lee REAL Bullet. I think Buffalo Bullet made one called the Ball-et.

If the twist rate is faster than this, T/C was probably thinking that people shooting these would be using sabot's.

You should be able to buy just the plastic "Jacket" and load just about any .44 cal pistol bullet in them. If I remember right, you also may be able to find sabots for .45 cal bullets.

MMP Sabots cost about $8 for 50 and you will be able to shoot just about any 429 (green sabot) or 451 (black sabot) cast boolit you like and should get acceptable accuracy. If you can beg a half dozen round ball (490 or 495 diam) from a fellow muzzleloader and a few greased patches, you might be pleasantly surprised. The weapons might not be designed for PRB but some individual barrels will love them anyway and they are deadly on deer. Welcome to the muzzleloading fraternity.

My opinion. With its 1-28 barrel twist your rifle has. Most sabot, bullets, maxi, or minni ball in 50 caliber will give satisfactory results. On the other hand patched Round Ball is not really compatible with the Impact's twist rate. As far as a lubricant suggested. A_B/P Patch Lube would serve your purpose just fine.

this is a tc so conicals are not the best way to go with this gun.

the tc. impact is a 1:28twist. it will shoot full bore boolits. like the great plains boolit are the maxie. ball . are like i do out of my 1: hawken paper patch them

it MIGHT shoot them. TC has such poor faith in their barrels that they give you some bs line about the 1:28 twist being to fast for conicals. When in truth its their crappy QLA at the end of the barrels which are often off center and cause the conicals to tumble.

i had problems with the QLA. i just lapped it out now no problems

I have a T/C Omega. The twist rate is 1-28. I cast a 300 grain 45 cal slug and use black harvestor sabots. I size all my bullets to 452 using a lee sizer. My mold drops at .454. I bought a mold from one of the mold makers here on the forums, but he no longer makes molds. I use blackhorn 209 and the gun shoots great. I am thinking about trying my maxi ball in the gun. Also check out the sticky by Idahoron on paper patching. I still meaning to try that also. Too many projects it seems.

a few years back, a friend had a CVA wolf and i think it was 1-28, but he loved the 250gr. real's that i cast for him. he was using real BP also, but that's all i remember about it, cause he did'nt have it but one deer season.

no reason that rifle with a 1:28 twist will not shoot a maxie. ball. i shoot them in a 1:28 and 1:20twist have also shot pp boolits in both with great results.

unless the QLA at the end of the barrel is off center. Check tc's track record of conical shooting ability, or give them a call. I guarantee you will hear the.... oh no... the 1:28 twist is much to fast for conicals, you need the 1:48 twist to shoot them.

what makes the def. if the qla. is of center it would not shoot eather one

Just one of my observations that I had no clue about till the other day. Hodgdon recommends the use of a wad between their pellets and conicald or sabots. After reading that, I started searching and found where there are guys who did testing in this arena. And they found that sometimes it even helps with PRB's.

As far as the OP, if your looking for cheap shooting then I would go with a full size conical and use a wad even if your using loose powder. Then tweak the lube your using and/or powder charge. I think a lot of people get discouraged with shooting other things besides sabots because they don't shoot good with a "standard" charge of 100 grains of powder. When all that might make a difference is to lower it to 85 or even 75.

I size all my bullets to 452 using a lee sizer. My mold drops at .454. Garbear

Ok, how about the .452 230 gr. boolits I cast for the .45 ACP? It's the lee mold. It's obviously a little lighter than the Shockwave 250gr. bullets, but I have a ton of them sitting around. Could I load them in the black Harvester sabots?
