So.....it's still raining here. My holiday plans to fish had to be adapted so I have been busy preparing for when I can fish.

Ok,
Now you're REALLY making me want to dust-off my tying gear. I haven't tied in 5 or more years. (Like I need another iron in the fire right now)

Darn fine looking flies there Jeff!

I need some of those in size 20 please. Rain doesn't bother the fish, go put those to good use.

When I was a kid we were camping at Newport Lake in Newport, ME. Fishing in the lake and catching fish. Came up to rain and stopped catching fish. Old guy there asked if we knew why we were not catching any. Said "They are all under the bridge, they don't want to get wet either!" Strangely enough, people on the bridge were catching fish!

Those are some nicely done streamers there, Jeff! I used to be an avid fly-tyer and fisherman, and spent many winter days at the vise. Dry flys were my thing, and poppers for perch. What sort of fish do you go after in NZ?

GEAR: Trout and salmon only in freshwater fish.

POPPER: The fish might already be wet but the rivers are so high and dirty there is no fishing to be had. I will have a crack at a tiny 'lure' for you today.

It's all in the presentation.

Jeff you are a meat fisherman. Real fly fishers use dry flys. Doesn't matter if the fish won't bite, they look pretty floating on the surface and bites when they occur are impressive. Ty lots of flys while you can still see. Old eyes don't work very good with 8/0 tying thread.

DUCK: I am not using a fly rod at this time. I use the streamers with either a bubble float or minimal weight depending on the water depth. I aspire to a fly rod.

So wheres the special eel flies ? Every show I watch are about the eels ! if you believe the shows the eels are the only thing that swims in the lakes and streams down there

POPPER: OK, I found the smallest hook I had; don't know the size but I laid it beside a .22RF for reference. Those tiny 'flies' are really hard work!

Jeff, Fly Fishing ain't that hard (can't be, I learned to do it!!!). Although I think that it will be more tricky for you. I am told that the key word when fly fishing for trout is FINESSE. I learned to cast fly rods in Cairns, Far Northern Queesland, and I was casting for Barramundi, Mangrove Jacks, Queenfish and the many Trevally, all of which don't mind if the fly smashes down and makes noise (some of the flies that we use have rattles and other noise makers).

What size hooks did you tie that lot on? Mostly we use 4/0 Tarpons to wrap up flies for Tropical Flies.

ETA You must have been typing while I was, that is a pretty small hook!!!

I sure don't know how you can tie them up so fancy, by the time I scrape them off the swatter they are so mashed I can't even run the hook through. So mostly I use worms.

Fishing is good just as the rain starts. Try flash, sparkle and bright colors for dirty water. Wooly buggers work well in fast running water, put a dumbbell or bead head on them, shiny, not black. I actually catch a lot when it is raining, but the have to be just under the surface, moving fast and shiner looking, no bugs. Their vision is disturbed by the splashes and will strike at anything moving. They don't get a good look at what the target is. Try that fly rod, it's a blast.

I picked up a saddle of Jungle Cock the other week. I see they are protected now. Might go back and get the rest the store had also.

I remember tying a lot of those little dry flys, Blue Dunns I think they were called, on a short #24 Aberdeen hook. Rio Grande perch loved them here in the smaller clear streams. It's been a while since I've messed with the small ones, I'd need a lighted magnifier to do it now.

Jeff get a 6 or 7 weight rod and a weight froward line. Practice false casting in your back yard or a city park with very few people. Scientific Anglers used to put of a very good pamphlet on how to fly cast. It also helped me determine what I was doing wrong and how to fix it. Roll casts also work very good and are simple. Just hit the nail with a hammer only with a fly rod in your hand. Spend a little time each day practice casting and you will soon do it well enough to catch big fish. Small trout on small streams take lots of patience and practice. Don't remember the age of your girls but I think the older one is old enough to be able to roll cast soon. Girls like fly fishing and it attracts a higher class boy friends. enjoy Duckiller
