I've been looking for the meaning of stock markings on a number one MkIII . It has a III*HV on it , I found that the "HV" means it was sighted for the MkVII load . I am pretty sure the "III" means it's the MkIII version . Can you tell me what the "*" means ?

Thanks Gunnerd !! Best I can tell , it means the magazine cutoff is gone .

It originly meant the dial sight,lobing sight,windage adjustable rear sight and magizine cutt off and slot were despenced with.Then later on the cutt off slot was reintroduced in some rifles these were referd to as Mk III,some early rifles that were refinished as Mk III*, had the * lined out and were again referd to as Mk IIIs,these will have the cutt off slot showing.Britidh Mk III* stocks cover the cutt off slot ,Australian made stocks do not rgardless which modle they are

This one is a Ligthgow but I guess I never looked for a cutoff slot , rifle was made in '42 or '43 as I remember .
