Loaded up some 17 grain loads last night and used my 311407 bullets. Only shot at 25 yards as I did not have much time and was shooting my K31 also. I posted about that at the milsurp board. Anyway I was impressed with this load and it would be more then enough to kill a deer I am thinking as from what I seen from watching the dirt fly from the berm used as a backstop. These thumped into the dirt pretty well. Need to do some more adjusting with my peep sight and a insert probably would have helped the groups but the load showed promise. I was not shooting for a group as per say so the barrel was not hot but warm I would suppose waiting between shots would have given me a better group and using a smaller insert instead of no insert as I use that for hunting that way. I have to raise my sight slightly which I will do next time out. It was shooting high so I adjusted it too much now it is shooting a tad low. I will need to adjust when I shoot at 50 and a 100 next time anyway.

............In my 30-06 with that boolit, 16.0grs of 2400 give me about 1640 fps. Your smaller 30-30 could be up there over 1750 fps, if not a bit more? Certainly good enough for deer.

I am not suprised with your satisfaction. You have a good bullet, a good powder and a good powder charge. 17 grains of 2400, 4227 and 4759 all work well in the 30-30 and give a velocity in the range of 1.7 to 1.8 K fps.

Such a load is easy on the rifle, barrel and brass, plus having enough "whack" for what a 30-30 was designed to do.

You can reduce the powder charge a grain or two and possible reduce your group size a smidge, but why?

Yep I loaded up my brass I shot again last night. I have a 150 rounds of once shot brass waiting to be loaded and I plan on getting some more just to keep on hand. After not shooting a 30/30 for years this is just plain fun and addicting.

Can't really be a bygawd, died in the wool, gun affectionato, or gun nut without at least one 30-30. Fun, handy, shoot cast from rb, 90 gr. mauser blts, and on up to 311284 if you screw with it a bit. You need to do yourself a favor and read Paco Kelly's articles on 30-30. Good read, good info, good loads. Paco tends to be a bit on the hot side for my taste, but he is time tested and an excellent writer.

I don't have any 2400 handy. Can anyone compare it to WC-820 (new not PD) in the 30-30 with heavier boolits in terms of burn rate/velocity?

I made a trip to Junior's Tuesday, which is the reloader's Olde Curiosity Shoppe in these parts. Found and bought 4 boxes of new unprimed Norma .30-30 brass for $4 each. I can't decide whether to load them or hang them on the wall.

Better you than me, if there had been 100+ of those they would have came home with me. I had been eyeing them the last couple of times I was over there.
Margaret will probably want those "match" prepped to whup the cowboy fellows. I have not seen here with a long gun lately, she must be slacking, lol.
Heard I missed a good meal Wed, night.

That was a good restaurant, and the PBR draws were $1.50.
